BASKETBALL

Blinn men's basketball coach resigns: Blinn College men's basketball coach Steve Spurlin resigned on Monday, according to the Brenham Banner-Press.

Spurlin steps down after 11 seasons at the helm of the Buccaneer program, including a 23-9 finish in 2009.

VOLLEYBALL

Bryan 25-25-25, Conroe 16-13-16: The Bryan Lady Vikings volleyball team beat Conroe in three sets on Tuesday to open the 2009 season.

Tiffany Regmund led the Vikings with 11 kills, five digs, and four aces. Teammate Kaylee Piatt had six kills, four aces, and 17 assists.

Bryan will play Akins in the Round Rock Westwood Warrior Showcase Tournament at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Consol 25-25-25, Magnolia West 19-12-13: The A&M Consolidated volleyball team started the season in style, sweeping Magnolia West in three sets 25-19, 25-12, 25-13 on Tuesday night at Tigerland Gym.

Consol was led by Erika Arthur with 13 kills and two blocks. Teammate Kelsey Kinley had 19 digs while Megan Caruso had 19 assists and Ashton Holliday had three aces.

Consol's JV team also won 25-13, 21-25, 25-15 while both freshman teams also won their first games.

Consol will travel to the Duncanville tournament starting on Friday.

Brazos Christian School 25-25-25, Snook 12-14-11: Brazos Christian School (1-0) opened its season with a 3-0 win over the Snook Lady Jays on Tuesday. Leanne Osborne led the Lady Eagle attack with five kills and seven aces. Kalee McCurdy and Christi Brigman both had four kills and Connor Cravey had two blocks. Brittany Perkins led the team in assists.

The BCS JV team won 25-11, 25-9. Jenna Lightfoot had 20 service points. Brazos Christian plays at Rudder on Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Rudder 25-20-25-21-15, Iola 18-25-14-25-10: The Class 3A Rudder volleyball team beat perennial Class A state power Iola in five sets on Tuesday to kick off the 2009 season.

Iola was led by the serving Stormi Evans and Mollie Martinez with 10 kills.

Iola hosts Bremond and Somerville in a doubleheader on Friday, starting at 2 p.m.
