Bryan captures consolation title: FARMERS BRANCH -- The Bryan softball team won one game, lost one and tied another Saturday on its way to claiming the gold bracket consolation title at the Spring Break Classic.

The Lady Vikings played in the gold bracket after winning three of four pool play games to start the tournament. Bryan lost 9-2 to eventual tournament champion Flower Mound to begin bracket play, then advanced through a tiebreaker (most batters to the plate) after tying Sherman 2-2.

Bryan defeated China Spring 4-2 in the consolation final.

In the early game, the Lady Vikings scored two runs in the top of the first before Flower Mound answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Lady Vikes scored twice in the sixth to pull out a successful tie against Sherman. Ashley Lara triple to plate Patty Gorzycki, then was driven in by Emily Peirce. Bryan advanced by sending 22 batters to the plate, one more than Sherman.

Peirce and Hannah Parker combined to pitch a two-hitter against China Spring. Peirce (6-5) was the starting pitcher and worked through the fourth, then returned to pitch the last two innings, earning an all-tournament selection by her teammates.

Jennifer Saxby went 2 for 2 with a double and drove in a runs to lead an attack that includes two hits each by Kaitlyn Hathcox and Lara, along with two RBIs by Gorzycki. Saxby tied the school record with the 22nd double of her career.

The Lady Vikings (14-7-1, 2-0) will return to District 12-5A play when they host Killeen Ellison at 2 p.m. Thursday.

TENNIS

Doubles champs help Vikings get fourth: CORSICANA -- The girls doubles combination of AshLee Bilbo and Madison Franze won their second tournament title in a row as the Bryan tennis team tied for fourth place at the Spring Break Slam on Friday.

Franze and Bilbo took four matches to claim the Division A doubles title, following their victory in the Mansfield tournament the previous week. The Lady Vikings rallied in the final to beat a team from Parish Episcopal 4-6, 6-4, 12-10.

Bryan registered third-place finishes from Eleazar Morales (Boys B singles), Shawn Greinert and Hunter Casarez (Boys B doubles), plus Helen Ask and Christine Ehresman (Girls B doubles). The Vikings' Eduardo Cisneros and Hassan Mahmood were fourth in Boys A doubles.

The Vikings that finished sixth included Kayla Siegert, Vanessa Ponce, Katy Lut and Luis Morales. Bryan's Jacob Atkins was 10th in Boys A singles.

Bryan will play in the A&M Consolidated Tiger Classic on March 26-27.
