BASKETBALL

Brenham advances: GALENA PARK -- The 13th-ranked Brenham Cubs held off the Nederland Bulldogs for a 56-49 victory in Class 4A boys basketball regional quarterfinal action Monday night at North Shore HIgh School.

Brenham (28-5) advances to play third-ranked La Marque on Friday at the regional tournament at the Merrell Center in Katy. La Marque (33-2) beat Houston Wheatley, 100-91.

The Cubs, who lost to Livingston last year in the regional quarterfinals, hit six 3-pointers en route to a 33-20 halftime lead over Nederland (21-15), which advanced past the first round for the first time in 55 years.

"They were mixing up a zone [defense] with a man-to-man, but we were hitting our shots," Brenham assistant coach Matt Farmer said. "In the second half, they really tightened up their man-to-man and mixed in a few zone traps.

"They cut that 13-point lead down to three, but our guys got to the rim and took care of business."

Chris Hull, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, led the Cubs with 16 points. Terrell Reese, a 6-3 senior, and Sabien Colvin, a 6-2 senior, each added 12.

Centerville falls to Anahuac: TOMBALL - The Centerville Tigers got off to a good start, but the Anahuac Panthers closed strong for a 48-39 victory in Class 2A regional quarterfinal boys basketball game Monday night.

Centerville (27-7) took a 14-5 lead, but that dwindled to 24-20 by halftime and the Panthers (20-14) outscored Centerville by 11 in the third quarter.

Centerville was led in scoring by Jonathan Cloud with 10 points. Braxton Mayes led Anahuac with 15.

Lexington falls: HAYS -- The San Antonio Cole Cougars rolled to a 55-28 victory over the Lexington Eagles in Class 2A regional quarterfinal playoff action Monday night.

Cole, 27-7, advances to the boys regional tournament in Seguin this weekend. The 17th-ranked Cougars will play 20th-ranked Hitchcock at 8 p.m. Friday. Hitchcock beat Natalia 90-56.

Jarrod Griffin led Cole with 21 points. Bryce King added 17. Julien Clark led Lexington (20-14) with 11 points.

SOFTBALL

Consol game postponed: Wet field conditions caused A&M Consolidated to postpone its home softball game against Belton until Monday.

The updated Lady Tigers schedule includes a home game against Copperas Cove at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Rudder, too: Rudder's game at Franklin was rescheduled for Wednesday.

BASEBALL

Beasley earns honor at Concordia: Junior third baseman Justin Beasley of Concordia University recently was named American Southwest Conference hitter of the week.

Beasley, who played at Franklin High School, batted .429 with a grand slam, three doubles and 11 runs batted in as Concordia swept a three-game series from Southwestern. Beasley was named one of "16 to watch in the ASC West" prior to the season.

Rudder game canceled: Rudder's home game against Thorndale, scheduled for Monday, was canceled because of wet weather.

POWERLIFTING

Navasota lifters host event: A&M Consolidated won the Rattler Invitational last weekend, while Navasota finished second.

Navasota's placing lifters are as follows: Kendrick Armstead, first (148 pounds); Dewon Davis, first (275); Cedric Collins, first; Kolby Castillo, third (123); Brian Vizuet, fourth (123); Xavier Franklin, fourth (165); and Jacob Bohannon, fifth.
