BASKETBALL

Bremond gets past Sabine Pass: WILLIS -- The Bremond boys basketball team won its playoff opener for the third consecutive season, beating Sabine Pass 47-45 on Monday night.

The Tigers (16-10) will face Ganado in the area round of the Class A Division I playoffs at a time and site to be determined.

D. Ray Morgan scored 24 points for Bremond, while Ryan Rekieta added eight.

GOLF

Area teams face off at Brenham Invitational: Brenham took third, while A&M Consolidated placed fifth at the Brenham Invitational boys golf tournament at Pebble Creek Country Club on Monday.

Montgomery won with a 321, while Huntsville finished second at 324. Brenham was third at 336 while Consol was fifth (343), Caldwell ninth (365), Rockdale 12th (379) and Madisonville 16th (427).

Bryan and Rudder were represented by medalists.

Montgomery's Marshall Smith shot 75 to win the individual title. Brenham's Blake Winkelman finished second while Huntsville's Ryan Bennett took third in scorecard playoff with four other golfers.

Finishers for Consol were Russell Corbelli (80), Woody Wu (86), Rusty Harrison (95) and Alex Zietsman (82). Caldwell's finishers were Carson Scitern (81), Jacob McNichol (96), Jeremy Peel (105) and Ryan Surovik (85). Brenham's finishers were Adam Carley (83), Zach Holder (91), Trenton Blundell (93) and Payton Kelm (84).

Madisonville's finishers were Marcus Bennett (83), D.L. Shiver (129), Seth Edmonds (136) and Nick Phillips (112). Rockdale's finishers were Casey Burrough (85), Lance Loewe (96), Grant Galbreath (116) and Tyler Wright (95).

Bryan's finishers were Bryce Beall (92) and Matt Martinez (95) while Rudder's B. O'Neal shot a 96.

SOFTBALL

Blinn softball tournament canceled: The Blinn softball team will play in the Seminole State College Tournament on March 27, a schedule change brought on by the cancellation of Tuesday's Odessa Tournament.
