Allen Academy senior Warren Davis may not have firm plans about college or his future just yet, but he does have big plans for the Rams this season. They're simple, too.
Davis wants more victories.
Last season, Allen Academy and Davis had to adjust to 6-man football. The transition was rocky as Allen Academy ended the season with a 1-10 record.
"Last year, we played a ton of good schools," Davis said. "Some of those teams we played had more guys than our 11-man team. This year, we know what we're getting into instead of being thrown into it at the last minute. It's going to make a huge difference this year having other seniors on the team."
The schedule isn't the only thing that changed this offseason.
Davis and Allen Academy head coach Eddie Luna had a long talk after last season. Luna gave Davis some things to work on, and the senior is back with a new role.
"Warren's attitude is much different this season," Luna said. "He's going to be our go-to guy this season. I watched him when he was a sophomore and thought, 'Boy, this kid is impressive.' I met him one day early last year, and he's wearing glasses and blonde hair. I said, 'This can't be the same Warren Davis!'"
Davis may be a bit mild mannered and quiet off the field, but on it he can be a force to be reckoned with. Playing running back and linebacker, he dishes out or takes as much contact as anyone on the field.
As a running back, the biggest change for Davis was the amount of passing routes he had to learn and run. His conditioning, and that of the entire team, was what he wanted to work on most for this season.
The transition to 6-man didn't affect him as much at linebacker, however, as Davis said the two positions are similar.
"There wasn't much difference from playing linebacker between the two," Davis said. "In 6-man, it's a little more chaotic, and you have to worry about the pass more, but that's it."
Luna likes having a senior leading his team on a defense that struggled at times last season. As a senior and a linebacker, Davis has all the intangibles to be just the sort of leader the other defenders can follow.
"He's our quarterback on defense," Luna said. "I want our seniors to take over. We keep it pretty simple, but everyone has to be in their zone. Warren's got the middle of the field covered."
