Brazos Christian's Ordonez ready for big work load

It would be tough enough asking Daniel Ordonez to fill the shoes of the leading rusher in Brazos Christian history, but the Eagles will need Ordonez to do that and more in his senior season.

Much more.

Ordonez is slated to play some as a receiver, quarterback, defensive back and kick returner in addition to replacing Chad Milburn as Brazos Christian's primary ball carrier. That's not just filling one pair of shoes. It's more like filling a whole rack.

"It's something that has to be done," Ordonez said. "Like when coach tells you to run down the field on kickoffs and stay in your lane, it's just another thing that has to be done. I know some guys who say they want to be on the field all the time, but it's pretty hard. That's why we're working extra hard, to be ready for that."

During his first three years on the varsity at the private school, Ordonez occupied several positions on the offense. Playing primarily at flanker, Ordonez was one of the Eagles' leading receivers and a threat on inside reverses. He also ran some option plays at quarterback.

Ordonez served as a second or third option while Milburn rushed for more than 4,000 yards in his career. Now Ordonez will assume a leading role.

"We're really depending on him this year," Brazos Christian coach Boyd Brigman said. "He will be carrying a heavy load, but I think he can do it. He's a coach's dream. He does anything you ask him to do and then some.

"The demands are going to be pretty high physically. Chad had the luxury of just playing offense, and Daniel will have to play defensive back as well. I don't think the mental demands will wear on him, because he's such a humble kid. He's going to do a pretty good job of it."

Preparing to play offense, defense and special teams, Ordonez increased his summer conditioning work. His only acceptable reason to miss workouts was for activities such as volunteering at camp as a member of the youth group at the Texas A&M Church of Christ.

Ordonez said his favorite NFL player is Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, popular for his big hits and big hair.

"I've always liked Troy Polamalu, and not just because he's the best player," Ordonez said. "He goes 100 percent. He always helps guys up after he hits them. Even if he gets laid out [on a block], he gets right back up and goes after the ball to try to save the touchdown."

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Ordonez will continue to be charged with preventing touchdowns this season. With his new role on offense, he also will need to find the end zone often for the Eagles to have success.

"I feel like a receiver, because that's where I've played for three years," Ordonez said. "I think after the first couple of scrimmages, I'll feel more like a running back.

"My goals are team goals. I don't care if I get 1,000 yards rushing. If we win and the team has fun, it's all good."
