The Cameron Yoe quarterback-receiver tandem of Steven Townsend and Brandon Freeman highlights the offensive attack on The Eagle's 2009 preseason All-Brazos Valley Football Team.
The versatile Townsend rushed for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns last year while throwing for 1,671 yard and 21 scores. Townsend has the advantage of having played the position last year.
Townsend's favorite target, Freeman, had 590 receiving yards and six touchdowns a season ago. St. Joseph's Chad Peevey joins Freeman on the receiving corps after a 2008 campaign that produced 56 catches, 897 yards and 12 TDs as a junior.
Cody Holliday of Somerville is the utility back. The all-purpose player ran for 1,019 yards and 10 TDs last year and connected on 90 of 171 passes for 1,504 yards and 14 TDs through the air.
In an area known for its running backs, Caldwell's Kysan Woolverton and A&M Consolidated's Chris Nutall are this year's best. Woolverton (175 carries,1,354 yards, 12 TDs) had to beat out teammate and fellow 1,000-yard rusher Nelson Scott, who averaged 9.95 yards per carry with 14 touchdowns.
Nutall was called up from the JV team in the third game of Consol's 2008 season, sparking a turnaround by rushing for 909 yards and nine touchdowns.
Leading the way on the offensive front are Consol tight end Kyle Doll and five top linemen: Bryan's Colton Barnes, Navasota's Aleon Calhoun, Leon's Cason McCune, Caldwell's Trent Meckel and Hearne's LaFrenzo Thomas.
Rockdale's Logan David (86 tackles) is part of a defensive line that includes Franklin's Dewayne Varvel, Navasota's Deondre King (97 tackles) and Centerville's Clay Hardee (85 tackles)
District 20-2A's returning Defensive MVP Sexton Curry (80 tackles) of Hearne is joined in a linebacking trio including Bremond's Justin Williams (166 tackles) and Navasota's Kesnick Jones (121 tackles).
Returning all-state safety Whitley Reed of Normangee (7 interceptions) insists he will return in the secondary. He and Brenham cornerback Jeremy Hall (4 interceptions), Consol's Andrew Fletcher (3 interceptions) and Lexington's Clint Hutson, also a deserving candidate at running back, are the BV's best. Navasota's Kye Hildreth probably should be the nickel back, but his move to quarterback could reduce his defensive playing time.
Bryan's Krey Bratsen, one of the area's best punters and wide receivers, is on the team as a return specialist. The senior returned one kickoff for a score and averaged 23.5 yards per return last year.
Rudder holds the preseason kicking edge. Punter Kyle Danford, although challenged by Bratsen, is our pick. Versatile Will Johnson is the favorite at place-kicker, with challenges from Brenham's Tanner Schmidt, Franklin's Hap Campbell and St. Joseph's Peevey.
