The Bryan Vikings' defending state champion just became the Rudder Rangers' first regional champion.

Enoch Rodriguez did it in dominating fashion.

Rodriguez won four of six individual events, finishing no worse than third in any of them and sticking his landing on the top step of the medal stand Thursday at the Region II gymnastics competition. He won the all-around title by 3.8 points.

Alison Garlick's third-place finish in the girls all-around helped A&M Consolidated take second.

Rodriguez was not enough to give Rudder the boys team crown. The Rangers finished second despite also earning a sixth-place finish in the all-around from Michael Gonzalez. Gonzalez and Rodriguez are the only veteran holdovers from the Bryan team that moved to Rudder this season.

"Enoch was super," Rudder coach J.T. Fletcher said. "Sometimes our workouts can be a little like a roller-coaster, up and down, and Enoch has gone through his rough moments. I think the two days he competed here are the best I've ever seen him do. He's been working hard on trying to clean up his form. He did everything he was supposed to do."

Kingwood won the boys team title with 328.75 points. Rudder had 323.30. The Rangers were close until a series of stumbles on dismounts on the rings, their fourth event.

Round Rock won the girls team championship with 220.95 points. Consol scored 223.5.

"The girls did really well, but we had a few mistakes here and there" Consol coach Julie Foght said. "If we can clean those up, we can definitely do better at state. We came away with second, and I'm really, really pleased."

The top three teams and top 10 individuals advance to the state meet, set for April 14-15 in Alvin.

Rodriguez punctuated the competition with his final event, the parallel bars, planting a perfect double-back dismount that brought enthusiastic cheers from the crowd at Rudder's gym and gave him first in the event. His 9.6 was by far the highest score of the day.

"It was one of my better days," Rodriguez said. "I was real with my p-bars. I haven't really done a set like that. My pommel horse routine yesterday was good. It was probably my best meet this year."

Having received a perfect 10 on the pommel horse Wednesday, Rodriguez had his lowest finish on the rings, where he was third. He still improved from his fifth-place position entering optional competition. He opened with a powerful iron cross, and his 8.8 score matched Thursday's best.

Rodriguez surged to the win on the floor exercise when the first-day leader, Kingwood's Greg Lupton, posted an 8.7. Rodriguez had a 9.2. He also won the high bar with a soaring release, won the pommel horse and placed second on the vault.

"My vault could have been better, because I took a big step," Rodriguez said. "In the high bar, I felt loose. Hopefully, I can clean it up before state and take the title again. That would be nice."

If he does it, it will be the third straight all-around state title for a Bryan-Rudder athlete.

Garlick's best individual finish came on the balance beam, where she posted a 9.65 for third. Teammate Maggie Drummond, who placed second on the beam, had Thursday's best performance to earn a 9.75.

"Alison was good for us the whole time," Foght said. "She put good scores up on all four events. We just need one or two more girls to do that at state."

Garlick also placed fourth on the vault and on the uneven parallel bars. She tied for eighth in the floor exercise.

Drummond was sixth in the all-around. Consol's Catherine Chenault placed third on the bars and also qualified for state on the balance beam.

With no more than two competitors allowed in the all-around from teams that qualify for state, that opened the door for Consol's Ben Guzman. Even had Guzman not advanced in the all-around, he had state-qualifying finishes in the high bar, floor exercise, pommel horse, rings and vault.

Rudder's budding girls program included Hannah Bernal, who placed 16th in the all-around.
