The Rudder girls are going back to a place they've never been before.

The last time a Bryan ISD girls gymnastics squad took a full team to the regional meet, they were still the Bryan Lady Vikings. But Rudder girls head coach Cali Curry, who coached those Bryan teams, will field a 10-member Lady Ranger team at the Region II gymnastics meet beginning Thursday at Kingwood High School in Humble.

"Our goal is to be to be one of the top three teams in our region," Curry said. "We have consistently been a second- or third-placing team within our region during our regular season meets."

The Rudder girls are seeded third based on district results, behind consistently strong teams from A&M Consolidated and Round Rock, the teams that finished ahead of them at district. Host Kingwood is seeded fourth based on district scores.

A top three finish would send Rudder to the state meet in Arlington in mid-April. If the Lady Rangers qualify, it would be the first time for a Bryan team to reach state since 2007 when Bryan senior Alyssa Zawieja won the state meet's all-around championship.

Since then, the entire Bryan ISD gymnastics program has shifted from Bryan High to Rudder.

Rudder has just one senior on its team, Meredith Fletcher, but Meredith and her sister, junior Madelyn Fletcher, are among the team leaders. Both will compete in the all-around and have been the team's top two finishers in each individual event.

The Rudder Ranger boys also build their team around veteran all-arounders Enoch Rodriguez and Michael Gonzalez. Rudder boys head coach J.T. Fletcher, whose team is 45-0 so far this season, says it will be up to the rest of a 12-member team to match their performances for a strong third team score in each event.

"They are seniors, and they're veterans," Fletcher said. "They've been all-arounders most of the year. Enoch Rodriguez is one of the top kids, if not the top kid, in the state of Texas. He brings it on every event."

Rodriguez won the pommel horse and shared the title in the high bar at last year's state meet. A senior now, Rodriguez won the state all-around championship as a sophomore competing for Bryan, which won back-to-back state team championships in 2008-09.

The Rudder boys will face defending state champions Kingwood at regionals.

Consol's girls, who won the district meet with 110.65 points, have not lost all season. Coach Julie Foght's Lady Tigers took the district crown over Round Rock and Rudder.

Consol's Alison Garlick, Catherine Chenault and Maggie Drummond finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, at district in the all-around. Drummond won the floor exercise.

All-around competitor Ben Guzman, whose best individual finish at district was third in the vault, leads the Consol boys contingent, which includes Connor Griffin in the floor, vault, and parallel bars events. Guzman took fifth in the all-around at the district meet held in Round Rock.
