Welcoming one gymnast back and adapting to the loss of another from knee injuries, the A&M Consolidated girls took the team title at the Consolidated Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The Lady Tigers topped a six-team field at the Brazos Valley Gymnastics facility, scoring a total of 110.2 points. Alvin's girls finished second with 108.1 and Rudder took third at 106.3.

On the boys side, Rudder dominated with 147 points while Consol's smaller squad took second at 106.3. Beaumont Ozen and Alvin had individuals in the meet but not full teams.

Alison Garlick of Consol captured the gold in the girls all-around competition with 37.75 points while Rudder's Madelyn Fletcher took second at 37.70. Garlick competed in her first optional meet since tearing her anterior cruciate knee ligament in March, an injury similar to the one Wednesday that knocked Debra Roussel out of the Consol lineup.

"I didn't really know where that injury was going to leave us," Consol coach Julie Foght said. "For those girls to pull together after that and then come in and win, it's fantastic. Alison had a really great meet. She was just very solid, very clean, and it paid off."

Garlick and Fletcher both posted the top score in two events. Garlick won the uneven parallel bars (9.8) and balance beam (9.5). Fletcher took the vault (9.5) and the floor exercise (9.85).

Rudder's Taylor Fletcher and Consol's Ben Guzman ruled the boys competition, finishing first and second in every event and posting the same score in the floor exercise. Fletcher captured all-around honors with 52.4 points while Guzman took silver at 52.2.

Fletcher won the parallel bars (9.1), high bar (8.4) and floor exercise (9.3). Guzman claimed the top spot in pommel horse (8.5), rings (8.6) and vault (9.5).

Rudder, which lost seven seniors off last year's state championship team, got a boost with Nicholas Harrison returning from injury and Kenneth Newbold adding an event. The Rangers' team score of 147 was 11 points better than their previous meet at Arlington.

"The boys did a real good job," Rudder coach J.T. Fletcher said. "We were a little more consistent today than we were a week ago, and that's all I can ask, that they show a little improvement each week. Taylor had a very good day. To edge out Ben Guzman is certainly quite a feat for him."
