Consol girls, Bryan boys headed to regional gymnastics meet

The A&M Consolidated girls and Bryan boys are district gymnastics champions and regional qualifiers. Now the Lady Tigers and Vikings will have a chance to add another positive line to their resumes.

Both teams have a chance to become state qualifiers when they compete at the regional meet at Humble's Atascocita High School. The compulsory round will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with the optionals scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

The top three teams at the regional meet will advance to state, provided they meet the mininum score requirement. The top ten finishers in each individual event also will qualify for the state meet, with a couple of Bryan girls and Consol boys hoping to punch their state ticket that way.

Bryan's boys will be seeking their 20th trip to state in 22 years under coach J.T. Fletcher, while the Consol girls will be trying to end a long drought. The Lady Tigers last qualified for the team competition at state in 2004.

The Consol girls scored 108.8 points in the district tournament, with Round Rock second at 107.4. The lineup for the Lady Tigers includes Abbie Thompson, Ellysa Trejo, Jesse Drummond, Kathryn Roussel and Lena Serhan.

Thompson took the all-around title at district, winnning the vault and taking second on the uneven parallel bars.

Consol coach Julie Foght expects the Lady Tigers to be among four teams battling for the region's three bids to state. The other top contenders are Kingwood, Friendswood and Round Rock.

The Vikings, seeking their seventh consecutive trip to state, will be clear favorites to win the boys title, according to veteran coach Fletcher. Round Rock, Kingwood and Atascocita should contend for the other state berths, Fletcher said.

Bryan's squad features Isaac Rodriguez, Matthew Kelly, Alex Reyes, Stefan Quartemont and Enoch Rodriguez.

For the Bryan girls, coach Cali Currie said sophomores Katelyn Lowe and Jade Vasquez should contend for state berths in individual events. They were members of the Lady Vikings team that finished seventh at state last year. Bryan's other competitors are freshmen Jessica Warden and Briana Van Dyne.

Consol will send two boys to the regional, Bryan Patterson and Nick Trejo.
