The Rockdale Tigers will be back at the UIL state golf tournament Thursday.

Class 3A will play Roy Kizer Golf Course, where the Tigers finished eighth in the eight-team field last season.

Rockdale won the Region III boys tournament at Conroe's Panorama Village Golf Club, shooting 684 in windy conditions on fast greens to beat second-place Sealy by seven shots.

Kirk Williams (81-75-156) finished as the third medalist for the Tigers. He had the best time of it a year ago at state, shooting 122 over 27 holes which included a rain-shortened second round limited to nine holes.

Dusty Loewe's Tiger golf team will have state championship experience after the 2010 run with Patrick David also returning. David shot 131 last year, but Rockdale will send a new crew to state that includes Garrett Korenek, Casey Burroughs and Grant Galbreath.

The Brazos Valley also had the top two individual medalists from Region III, and both are sophomores.

Madisonville's Marcus Bennett won the District 20-3A title at Big Cedar Golf Club between Teague and Fairfield, shooting a 69 on the second day of the tournament to win by 18 strokes at 147. At the Region III tournament at Panorama Village, Bennett shot rounds of 74 and 79 to win the tournament by three strokes. His Mustangs finished seventh as a team after winning the 20-3A crown.

Caldwell's Carson Scitern is following in the footsteps of his brother, Cameron, who placed seventh at state in 2008 and tied for sixth in 2009. The Hornets' sophomore shot 79-77 and was second medalist at the regional tournament, leading Caldwell to third place in the team race.

Scitern has a 9:45 a.m. tee time for his opening round. Bennett will play in the final group of the day, teeing off at 9:55 a.m.

Rockdale will be in the second group of teams to tee off Thursday, along with Perryton, Proper and Fredericksburg. Galbreath has the earliest tee time for the Tigers, at 8:55 a.m.
