Lake Travis took home the big silver trophy and the team title from the Aggie Cup Invitational on Tuesday, while the local boys golf teams left Miramont Country Club with plenty of promise.

The defending Class 4A champions from Lake Travis ended Austin Westlake's two-year run as champion, holding off the charging Chaparrals to win the 36-hole event by two shots. The Cavaliers posted a score of 302 on a breezy day to finish the tournament at 601. Westlake recorded Tuesday's low round with a 295 total, unable to overcome starting the day nine shots out of the lead.

A&M Consolidated placed ninth and Bryan 14th in the 18-team field loaded with some of the top high school teams in Texas. The Tigers and Vikings both had freshmen finish in the Top 10 in the individual standings, with Bryan's Dylan Godfrey and Consol's Max Miller tying for seventh place.

Miller and Godfrey both shot 3-over 75 on Tuesday, when the wind wasn't quite as strong as the gusts that sent scores soaring Monday at Traditions Club, where the freshmen opened with 78s.

"[Bryan] Coach Newhouse and I were talking today about our freshman classes," Consol coach and tournament host Justin McKown said. "They are probably as good a couple of freshman classes as we've had come along in a long time."

Lake Travis junior Klein Klotz held on to win individual medalist honors, finishing two shots ahead of teammate Joey Hearn. Klotz followed his sizzling opening round of 69 with a 76 on Tuesday for a 145 total. Hearn fired the best round at Miramont, a 1-under 71.

Austin Westlake teammates Matthew Perrine and Charles Neel White tied for third, both matching par for a two-day total of 148. Matt Gilchrest of Southlake Carroll was fifth with 73-149.

Consol's Maroon Team shot a 315 at Miramont to finish the tourney at 642. The Tigers slid two spots in the standings from the opening day, but Consol was four shots behind San Antonio Churchill and San Antonio Reagan, who tied for seventh.

"We didn't compete with Lake Travis and Austin Westlake, but we were right there with the guys like Churchill and Reagan," McKown said. "I don't think we've played our best golf yet.

"Max is pretty special. That's a really good tournament against this field."

Sophomore Beau Moore produced the second-best score for Consol, shooting 78 in the final round to finish at 160. The other Tigers scores were T.J. McGrath (80-164), Andrew Scamardo (82-165), and Jarred Jeter (82-170).

Bryan's Dylan Godfrey played his way into the Top 10 with steady play. Viking junior Clayton Hudson, the only non-freshman in the starting lineup, bounced back to shoot 74 for a total of 160.

"Dylan's just a consistently good player," Newhouse said. "He doesn't make a lot of mental mistakes, and he has a lot of confidence. Clayton came back with a really good round. That's the way he started the year."

The Vikings shot 323 on Tuesday to finish at 656. Bryan's other scores were Zach Godfrey (86-169), Cameron Carver (88-174) and Josh Resendiz (88-175).

Consol's White team had a round of 343 to finish 16th with a 706 total. The Tigers scores included: Brian Wu (78-165), Russell Corbelli (82-173), Ben Zimmer (95-183), Andrew Gehring (88-185) and Stan Kellen (96-212).

Madisonville junior Marcus Bennett posted the best score among the individual medalist entries, shooting his second consecutive 77 for a 154 total that was just outside the Top 10. Rudder sophomore Jonathan Vasquez had an 80 to finish at 161.
