Neither strong winds nor opponents from a higher classification could prevent the Lake Travis boys golf team from completing the opening round of the Aggie Cup Invitational atop the leaderboard.

Lake Travis, the defending Class 4A state champion, grabbed a nine-shot lead halfway through the tournament by shooting an impressive 299 at wind-swept Traditions Club on Monday. Defending tourney champion Austin Westlake is in second place with the Aggie Cup shifting to Miramont Country Club for Tuesday's final round.

San Antonio Johnson, Southlake Carroll and Leander Vandegrift are tied for third place at 321. Johnson has two juniors already committed to Texas A&M, while Southlake Carroll was third in Class 5A at state last year.

Junior Klein Klotz of Lake Travis was the only player to break par Monday, shooting a 3-under 69 that radiated from the scoreboard on a day with wind gusts above 20 mph.

Host A&M Consolidated's Maroon team is tied for seventh place with San Antonio Reagan after shooting 327. Freshman Max Miller led the Tigers, overcoming a rough start to post a 78.

"He was 4-over after four holes and played the last 14 in 2-over," Consol coach Justin McKown said. "That's impressive, especially for a freshman."

Consol's next two scores came from sophomores Beau Moore (82) and Andrew Scamardo (83). Senior T.J. McGrath shot an 84 and junior Jarred Jeter had an 88.

The Bryan Vikings, with four freshmen in the lineup, opened with a 333 for 13th place in the 18-team field. Freshman Dylan Godfrey had a good day on one of his best courses, shooting a 78 to lead Bryan.

"Dylan played well," Bryan coach Ron Newhouse said. "That's pretty close to his average, but on a day like today that's a pretty good round."

Zach Godfrey was next for the Vikings with an 83, followed by Cameron Carver (86), Clayton Hudson (86) and Josh Resendiz (87).

Consol's White team was 16th after shooting 363. Brian Wu led the Tigers with an 87 and Ben Zimmer shot 88. Other scores included Russell Corbelli (91), Andrew Gehring (97) and Stan Kellen (116).

Among the individual medalists, Marcus Bennett of Madisonville opened with a 77, Consol's Logan McKown shot an 80 and Rudder's Jonathan Vasquez posted an 81.

Klotz is being recruited by several schools and does not have A&M on his short list. He will go into the second round with a five-shot lead over Johnson's Jake Judkins, who is committed to play for the Aggies along with teammate Jake Goodman (82).

"I didn't hit anything high and I didn't get aggressive," Klotz said. "It was a solid round. We haven't played to our potential yet, but I think we know we're the best team in the state -- not 4A, not 5A, the best team. We have a lot of confidence in ourselves."
