The Cameron Lady Yoe rallied into contention for the championship on the second day of the Class 2A state golf tournament and finished second Tuesday at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.

Cameron made up 17 strokes on first-round leader Kermit and shot a 741 total, three strokes behind champion Tuscola Jim Ned but two ahead of Kermit.

"We just fell a little short," Cameron head coach Randy Sapp said. "We weren't going to go out and take a lot of chances. Everybody was going to shoot a better score today, put the pressure on and play with confidence. We knew that we had a chance to do something special in Cameron athletic history. If we could come back and win this thing, it would be one of the greatest comebacks in the history of our program."

The Lady Yoe gave themselves a chance, getting into contention for the title over the final three holes. Jim Ned held off Cameron to win the title by three shots at 738.

Cameron had the best round of the day at 356, 10 shots better than Jim Ned. Cameron stood in fourth after Monday's first round at 385.

Cameron's Emily Fuchs placed seventh individually in her third straight state tournament, finshing at 85-88-173. Teammate Lauren Eichinger shot 92-84-176, while Haley Miller and Emily Dohnalik both made double-digit improvements over their opening rounds. Miller's 89 gave her a two-day total of 189. Dohnalik's 95 gave her a 203. Jenna Sapp, who was ill after the first round, was forced to withdraw.

Coach Sapp was able to monitor live scoring online and knew his team was contending. He had seen the same kind of improvement in the Region IV tournament when Cameron improved on a first-round 365 with a 345 the second day.

"They came here not just to play but to win it," Sapp said. "They had taken a challenge and hadn't backed away at all."

Jim Ned was led by Madison Myers who shot a second-round 75, matching Sonora's Elizabeth Chavarria with the second-best total of the day. Chavarria had 75s each day to win the 2A medalist state title. Silver medalist Macie Seeker of Melissa had the best day, with a 74.

Ross Arrington of Anderson-Shiro followed his opening round of 79 with an 80. His 159 total tied the Owls' junior for eighth place. Muleshoe's Tyson Turnbow shot 75-73-148 for a five-stroke victory at Roy Kizer Golf Course, a par-71 layout over 6,739 yards.
