Senior running back Xavier Creeks, the leading rusher on the Navasota football team, suffered a broken leg in a car accident early Thursday morning.
The top-ranked Rattlers, playing in the state championship game for the first time in 24 years, will be without Creeks when they face Gilmer for the Class 3A Division II title at 4 p.m. Friday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
Navasota head coach Lee Fedora said Creeks was injured when he fell asleep while driving home after taking his father to work in College Station at around 6 a.m. Thursday.
"It's part of adversity," Fedora said. "Thank God he's alive."
Creeks rushed for 1,017 yards on 117 carries, scoring eight touchdowns for the Rattlers. He had two touchdown runs in Navasota's semifinal victory over Bellville last week.
