One week into the real high school football season, 7-on-7 play is making news.

WFAA-TV in Dallas aired a report that appeared to implicate assistant coaches at Southlake Carroll and Euless Trinity coaching 7-on-7 teams. That's a violation of University Interscholastic League rules, and the UIL sent out e-mails to all member schools this summer as a reminder.

If TV stations still had cutting room floors, I'm fairly certain that KBTX would have clips of the same kind of end zone coaching shown on WFAA. They could do that just walking around Penberthy Fields during in early July at the 7-on-7 state championships.

While they are required to be positioned beyond the end zone, some coaches almost involuntarily shout out instructions. After covering this tournament for years, there have been far worse rules violations. That's why the coaches are in the end zone now.

As Channel 8's report points out, "sport specific skill instruction is prohibited" during the summer. In a 7-on-7 practice between Trinity and Carroll held on June 24, the report appears to show that those rules were broken.

Executive committees from Trinity's and Carroll's districts (Districts 6-5A and 7-5A) will evaluate results of an investigation on each school before handing out possible sanctions.

Carroll is already reeling from its quarterback, Daxx German, being declared ineligible by 7-5A's district executive committee before the start of the season. If that wasn't enough, Copperas Cove handed the Dragons a 35-14 loss last week.

German is appealing the ruling from the 7-5A committee. He will appear before the state's executive committee Sept. 14.

The Southlake Carroll Dragons and Euless Trinity Trojans are two of the most high-profile football programs in the state. In some seasons, you can expand that to include the nation. That would apply to Trinity this year.

With any summer program, someone will try to push the rules of what can or can't be done -- or who can or can't do it. Behind the scenes, there is a perception among many high school coaches in the state that many teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have pierced that envelope when it comes to 7-on-7. Some believe that coach-run workouts, like the ones Carroll and Trinity allegedly held, happen far too often and step over the line.

UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt has said the organization has at least considered removing restrictions on high school coaches being involved in 7-on-7, but things don't sound inclined to go that way. That's in part because of the pressure on players to be involved year-round. Some may want -- and deserve -- the summer off, and perhaps coaches could use the break, too.

Make no mistake: 7-on-7 is a moneymaking business.

At the state level, 7-on-7 has only expanded. It has never taken a step back in size. There were 128 teams participating over a three-day period in the Bryan-College Station area. The organizers and even the officials make money in this deal. And in this community, it's at least a small boon to the economy each year Texas A&M hosts the event.

If Carroll and Trinity are punished, it could put the idea of a high school summer football program at a crossroads. If the limelight football programs take a hit because their assistants shouted instructions, some schools might think twice about even competing. Why risk a penalty that could hurt your 11-man season over 7-man touch football?

If there's no punishment forthcoming, many will believe that it's because of the celebrity of those schools and their football programs.

In a game that's all about pass catching, this one might be a Catch-22.

The teams Lexington and Cameron play this week appear to be very strong playoff contenders. Lexington visits Blanco, while Cameron will host La Vega. The perennially contending La Vega Pirates lost a one-point decision to state-ranked Prosper last week.

Those accustomed to searching the nooks and crannies of the old site in an effort to find useful information may find this slick new look to be challenging. But it's not.
