A&M Consolidated's football players spotted several flaws in their 43-25 homecoming victory over Killeen Ellison, and Tigers coach Jim Slaughter found no fault in their evaluation.

The Tigers (4-1, 2-0 District 12-5A) scored touchdowns on six of their first eight possessions Friday night at Tigerland Stadium to push their winning streak to four games. Although Consol wasn't seriously threatened in the second half, the victory was more comfortable in margin than in style.

Consol committed several costly penalties, gave the football away twice in the kicking game and allowed a couple of worrisome long touchdown passes. After the game, Slaughter talked to his team longer than usual about a win, then commended his players for their response.

"How can you be unhappy about a score of 43-25?" Slaughter said. "I shouldn't be aggravated, but I am pleased that the kids are not satisfied with their performance. This group of kids has high expectations and they're not pleased with some the things we did wrong, and neither are [the coaches]."

It would be difficult to find anything wrong with Consol's offensive production through the first three quarters. The Tigers were forced to punt on their first possession of the game, then scored on five consecutive drives to build a 36-12 halftime lead.

Consol stalled on the opening drive of the second half, then put together a 71-yard touchdown march to answer an Ellison score and push the lead to 43-19.

The Tigers thrived on big plays in the first half, starting with a 66-yard touchdown run by Chris Nutall and ending on Jacob Bronowski's 42-yard scoring pass to Nutall. Fullback Clinton Banks produced a one-play scoring drive with an 80-yard touchdown run on his way to gaining 153 yards on 14 carries.

Consol also had what should have been a 72-yard touchdown run by Quinton White trimmed to 41 yards because of an unnecessary illegal blocking penalty, although the Tigers managed to score on that possession.

"They've got great running backs over there and we didn't do a good job of tackling," Ellison coach Buddy McBryde said. "Three plays over 50 yards was the difference in the ballgame. You can't do that and our kids know that because normally we have a guy who can do that."

The Eagles (1-4, 0-2) got only one carry for 3 yards from their leading rusher David Cobb, who was limited to a few plays as the coaching staff opted to protect his injured ankle. Isiah Cowan rushed for 119 yards on 17 carries and Devante Cloud caught a couple of touchdown passes for the visitors.

Ellison's start was terrific. The Eagles took the opening kickoff and needed just five plays to go 74 yards, with Cowan scoring on a 30-yard run.

The Eagles failed to capitalize after recovering White's fumble on a punt return at the Consol 36, but quarterback Jacob Brank hooked up with Cloud on a 50-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter as Ellison pulled within 14-12 despite missing the two-point conversion attempt.

"I don't think Killeen Ellison is a bad football team, so I wasn't surprised at what they did," Slaughter said. "I appreciated the reaction of our kids and how we started putting points on the board. That was a good sign."

In a dominating second quarter the Tigers gained 216 yards on 19 plays.

Consol rolled up 390 yards in the first half and the teams combined for 645 before Emily Nixon was crowned homecoming queen at halftime. The Tigers finished with 528 yards of offense and Ellison had 411.

Although the passing game wasn't needed often, Consol had a good night through the air. Bronowski returned to the starting lineup and played one half, completing 4 of 6 passes for 92 yards with his first touchdown completion at the varsity level.

Senior tackle J.J. Bynum led the Consol defense with a couple of tackles for losses, including a quarterback sack that stopped an Ellison drive in Tiger territory and set up the last touchdown of the half.

Banks did not play after twisting his ankle on a run at the end of the third quarter, but the senior said he was OK after the game.
