Steve Huff, who left a mark on the A&M Consolidated football program with his jet sweep play, will have a chance to make the first imprint on College Station High School athletics.

Huff, a former assistant coach at Consol who spent the last six seasons as head coach at Midwest City High School in Oklahoma, has been named the first head football coach and campus athletic coordinator at College Station High.

The new school will open next fall with freshmen and sophomores. For two years, College Station High will compete in a UIL district at the varsity level in every sport except football, which is expected to play against a combination of junior varsity and varsity opponents.

Huff was chosen from a field of 88 applicants.

“I am extremely excited to be returning to College Station,” Huff said in a CSISD release. “A big part of a school’s culture is athletics and extra-curricular activities, and the opportunity to help a brand new high school develop an identity, traditions and culture is appealing to me. Of course we want to win games, but we also want to develop character and core values in our students throughout the entire athletic department and school.”

Last spring Huff was one of six coaches who interviewed for the Consol job that went to David Raffield. After his 2011 interview Huff said he was happy at Midwest City but interested in the possibility of bringing his family back to College Station.

“Spending six years in College Station, I have great friends in the school system there and great Christian friends from church,” Huff said then. “We loved living there.”

The other candidates who interviewed for the job are Navasota head coach Lee Fedora, a former Consol player; Consol assistant coach Stoney Pryor; Sweetwater head coach Craig Slaughter, a former coach at Hearne; and Gary Thiebaud, the head coach at Cypress Ridge, who applied for the Consol opening last year but was not among the six candidates interviewed for that job.

The Eagle obtained the names of the coaches who interviewed through an open records request.

Huff, 48, compiled an overall record of 60-12 in six seasons at Midwest City, making the playoffs each year and going 21-2 over the last two years. The Bombers went 11-1 last season, falling to Owasso 48-45 in four overtimes in the second round of the state playoffs.

A Missouri native, Huff has 16 years of head coaching experience and nine as an assistant.

Huff started at Consol coaching defensive backs and spent four years as offensive coordinator. He introduced the jet sweep play that was the Tigers' trademark during the tenure of former head coach Jim Slaughter. Huff served as offensive coordinator on the Consol team that reached the Class 5A Division I state semifinals in 2005.

His other head coaching jobs were at U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City, Kennewick High School in Kennewick, Wash., Tecumseh High School in Tecumseh, Okla., and DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Mo.

Huff was a graduate assistant coach at the University of Kansas, part-time assistant at Western Michigan University, graduate assistant coach at the University of North Dakota and assistant coach at Platte County High School in Platte City, Mo.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Central Missouri State University in 1986 and his Master of Science in Physical Education from the University of North Dakota in 1987.

Huff and his wife, Tracy Treps, have two children, 8-year-old son Jett and daughter Tatum, who is 4.
