Sophomore Kyle Danford is keenly aware of how much work still needs to be done. The Rudder Rangers' multipurpose player also knows that by playing his team's first-ever football game, he has staked a claim in something special.

"I'm really happy to be part of all of this," Danford said. "We just need to take time to realize what we're in and enjoy it. We're priveleged to have the opportunity we have, and we should just make the best of it."

In the 48-0 loss to Cleveland at Merrill Green Stadium, Danford quickly noted the changes from a freshman game to a 3A varsity contest.

"As freshmen, you had time to react, and you could think a lot longer, but at the varsity level, you have to know your job right away, where you are supposed to be," Danford said. "We've got to be leaders on the defensive side. If we can stop them on defense, that can get us rolling, and maybe that intensity carries over to offense."

Danford doesn't have to settle for being a leader on one side of the ball. And on so young a team, versatility makes Rudder's starting safety invaluable.

"He's our punter, can do some kicking duties, plays quarerback and has got really good hands as a receiver," Rudder coach C.M. Pier said. "We're thinking about using him as a tight end. He works hard in the weight room and at practice, a multiple-sport guy that you always appreciate."

He will have a chance to be part of all of the sports he enjoys. For now, it's football, but that will change with the seasons.

"My favorite sport by far is baseball," admits Danford. "I love playing baseball and have been playing since I was about 5 years old. I picked up a baseball when I was about 4. I also play basketball. That's my mom's side of the family's sport, and it just came to me naturally."

On the surface, Danford seems to take the games he plays in stride.

"He's just laid-back," Pier says, "but he plays hard and tries to do the right thing all of the time. He's a real pleasure to be around."

Danford admits that the first game was a test of his cool approach. But stepping onto the field at Merrill Green Stadium helped calm his nerves.

"I woke up and knew it was the first game day, and I knew it was going to be tough," Danford said. "Getting to the field and being able to walk around helped settle it a little, getting to know your surroundings since it was my first time playing there. I was really nervous, but by the first snap I got over it. I think I'll be more relaxed now that I've got that under my belt."

Danford likes the idea of playing multiple positions.

"I wouldn't want to be on the sidelines the whole time," Danford said. "I want to go out there and help my team win."
