LEANDER -- The Rudder Rangers must have enjoyed matching their win total from 2009 in only their second game this season.
In fact, they enjoyed it so much they rolled up a school-record 63 points and 543 yards of total offense as they beat Leander Rouse 63-27 on Friday night at Bible Memorial Stadium.
Rudder quarterback Kyle Danford scored two rushing touchdowns and threw for three more. He scored on a 20-yard run in the first quarter and hit Mike Jones with a 2-yard touchdown pass halfway through the second quarter. Danford added a 4-yard scoring run just before the end of the first half, making the score 28-13.
Danford then found Tre Hammond with a 38-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter. Nine minutes later, he hit Jones for his second 2-yard touchdown catch of the game, pushing Rudder's lead to 49-20. The senior led the Rangers in rushing with 14 carries for 163 yards and was 10-for-16 passing for 98 yards with no interceptions.
Brendan Steptoe opened the game's scoring by returning a blocked field goal attempt 95 yards for a touchdown. Rouse answered back with two quick touchdowns from Logan Kinder, who scored on a 43-yard pass from Tai Gattison and a 60-yard run.
As happy as Rudder was about its offense, the Rangers' defense needed work in the first quarter. Rudder gave up 244 yards of offense in the period before making some adjustments to its scheme. Those seemed to work, as the Rangers' defense held Rouse to minus-10 yards in the second quarter and only gave up 99 total yards in the second half.
Running back C.J. Curtis added two touchdowns of his own, scoring on a 17-yard run in the third quarter and a 64-yard run in the fourth. He finished with 10 rushes for 156 yards. Fellow running back Restevin Anderson carried the ball 10 times for 91 yards and scored Rudder's final touchdown on a 45-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Hammond led the Rangers in receiving yards, catching six passes for 79 yards. Jones only caught two passes for 4 yards, both resulting in touchdowns.
Rudder (2-0) will face off against former District 24-3A foe Navasota (2-0) at Merrill Green Stadium next week.
