HEARNE -- The first touchdown ever scored by the Rudder Rangers cut Hearne's lead to five points in the third quarter.

It took Hearne 48 seconds to ruin the moment.

Kenneth Jones Jr. scored with 4:53 left in the third quarter on a 10-yard run, and the Hearne Eagles completed a 41-point second half on their homecoming Friday to beat Rudder 47-13.

Rudder's Tre Hammond threw the first Rangers' touchdown, finding a wide-open Mike Jones for a 34-yard catch and run as the Rudder sideline exploded with joy at Wood Field.

Hearne's Jones tempered the enthusiasm by ripping off a 41-yard run, and Rudder had a 15-yard facemask penalty tacked on to the end. Two plays later, Jones ran in from 14 yards. The sophomore running back picked up 164 yards on just five carries.

"We are still making some youthful mistakes but are coming on and getting better," Rudder coach C.M. Pier said. "A huge turning point in the game was when they made that run and got the facemask on top of that. You can't do that. They go down, boom, boom, boom and score.

Jones added his second touchdown late, scoring on a 45-yard run. The sophomore swept left and cut across the field to pull away from the Rudder secondary to increase Hearne's lead to 41-7.

"I felt we weren't playing at our level after being off for two weeks," Hearne coach Ralph Lymas said. "I know we had been off for two weeks and had some rust, but thank God we got the rust off and started playing. I know [the Rangers] are young, but people don't need to overlook those kids. Those kids will play."

The win gave Hearne (1-2) its first victory of the season after consecutive one-point losses.

Justin Evans had three-second half scoring runs on quarterback keepers for the Eagles, including a 13-yarder after Hearne's Thomas Williams blocked a punt and Andrew Washington recovered. Evans' final touchdown was a 14-yarder with 11:09 left.

"He hurt his hand, but he settled down," Lymas said. "He works so hard and is so competitive that he has to focus back in on what he is doing. We've been fortunate the last three weeks to block punts."

Rudder sophomore quarterback Hammond played better than his 25-yard rushing total would indicate. He was sacked five times and lost yardage on 11 plays. He also provided a late lift for the Rangers with a beautifully-thrown fade pass to Matt Fritsche, who caught the 23-yard touchdown with 29 seconds left.

The Rangers couldn't savor that memory long, either. Freshman DeKendrick Jeffery returned the kickoff 85 yards for a Hearne touchdown.

"We're getting better," Pier said. "It's coming in slow steps, but it's coming."

The Eagles scored on their second possession of the game when Andre Gurode shot through a hole off right tackle, was hit at the 10 but battled his way into the end zone to finish off a 50-yard run. Gurode rushed for 88 yards on six carries. The 6-0 lead came at 4:10 of the first quarter and held until halftime.

Rudder nearly responded, getting a 45-yard kickoff return from Hammond. Four plays later, Hammond ran to the 16, where the Rangers faced a third-and-1. They were stopped short of the first down, though, when Hearne's Cody Rosprim and William Moten cut down Rudder running back Dakotah Teague for no gain on fourth down.

Turnovers stopped promising drives by both teams in the second period. Rudder's Samaj McGruder intercepted a pass from Hearne quarterback Evans in the end zone and returned the ball to the 11.

Hammond netted 30 yards on back-to-back carries that moved the Rangers into Hearne territory, but Sexton Curry recovered a fumble. The Eagles looked to have the ball in great shape when senior linebacker Williams intercepted a Hammond pass at the Rudder 34. Trying to lateral, Williams was hit and fumbled and the Rangers' Connor Batten immediately reclaimed the ball for Rudder.
