Eagle staff report

Milano defensive lineman John Jentsch earned two spots on the 61st Annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 1A All-State Football Team. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound senior was picked as a defensive lineman and punter.

The Brazos Valley was well represented with six players making one of the first three teams.

Joining Jentsch on the first team was Normangee wide receiver Dominique Barton. Burton defensive back Xavier Bethany was on the second team along with Normangee kick returner Darius Darnell.

Third-team selections included Milano linebacker Dominique Messer and Normangee linebacker Colin Reed.

Jentsch had 20 tackles for losses, including 12 sacks. He also had 18 quarterback pressures, forced six fumbles and recovered six for the 10-2 Eagles. He averaged 41 yards on 36 punts with 12 inside the 20.

Barton had 71 catches for 1,141 yards with 12 touchdowns. The senior also had 980 yards rushing and six scores.

Bethany had 119 tackles though the senior missed four games for the 12-3 Panthers. Darnell returned four kickoffs for touchdowns, averaging 35.3 yards on 18 returns.

Messer had 146 tackles. The senior, who was 13-A's co-defensive most valuable player, had 10 quarterback pressures. Reed had 154 tackles, including 25 tackles for losses for the 7-4 Panthers. Reed, a senior, also earned honorable mention at quarterback as did Bethany.

Also earning honorable mention was Darnell and Burton's Juwan Mathis at running back and Milano's Tyler Endlsey on the defensive line.

In statewide voting, Tenaha quarterback Reginald Davis and Mason defensive back Chance Stockbridge were the players of the year.

Davis was the Offensive Player of the Year. The 185-pound senior, who has pledged to Texas Tech, passed for 2,015 yards on 101 of 168 with 26 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also carried the ball 172 times for 1,915 yards with 36 TDs in leading the unbeaten Tigers to the Division II title.

Stockbridge was the Defensive Player of the Year. The 138-pound senior had a school-record 13 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns in the leading the unbeaten Punchers to the Division I state championship.

The TSWA all-state teams take into consideration the postseason while the AP's sports editors' teams released last month are based on the regular season.
