FOOTBALL

Consol lineman makes third-team all-state: A&M Consolidated's Patrick Bettiol, who was moved from tight end to offensive guard to help his team's blocking, is a third-team selection on the Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 5A all-state football team.

The 220-pounder, who blocked for a pair of 1,000-yard rushers, signed with Tarleton State.

Bryan guard Colton Barnes, who signed with Angelo State on Wednesday, was honorable mention along with Vikings running back Nate Jones.

GYMNASTICS

Rudder girls place fourth at home meet: The Rudder girls gymnastics team placed fourth at its first home optional meet of the season Saturday.

Alvin won followed by Birdville and Richland.

Rudder freshman Hannah Bernal placed fourth on the uneven parallel bars, sixth on the vault and floor exercise and eighth all-around. Sophomore Kristal Alvarado placed ninth on the vault and 10th on the beam and floor.

WRESTLING

Bryan takes first, Consol second at District 25 meet: KILLEEN -- Bryan won its fourth straight district title, while A&M Consolidated snuck past Killeen Ellison for second place at the District 25 meet Saturday at Killeen Shoemaker.

Winning eight of 15 weight classes, Bryan scored 272.5 points for first. Consol had 214 points, while Ellison took third at 213.5.

Shoemaker was fourth at 142 followed by Killeen (122), Harker Heights (101) and Copperas Cove (70).

Bryan's Fabian Diaz won his weight class at 103 pounds along with teammates Logan Meekma (112), Edgar Davila (119), Gabriel Jimenez (125), Victor Thomas (135), Kevin White (140), David Jones (215) and Kendall Gilbert (heavyweight).

Bryan's Tracey Hodges (145) and Denzel Brown (189) also qualified for the Region IV meet by taking second. Bryan's Zach Escobar (130) and Saul Ramirez (152) are alternates after finishing third.

On the girls side, Bryan junior Victoria Huitt placed second at 165 to advance to regionals.

The two-day Region IV meet will open Friday at the Blossom Athletic Complex in San Antonio. The top four in each weight class will advance to the state meet set for Feb. 26-27 at the Delco Center in Austin.
