Lake Travis receiver Conner Floyd caught four touchdown passes from quarterback Michael Brewer as the Cavaliers beat DeSoto 42-39 to win the Division I FOX Sports Southwest 7-on-7 State Championship on Saturday at Kyle Field.

Brewer and Floyd teamed on a 45-yard score on the game's initial play, helping Lake Travis to a 21-6 first-half lead. The duo connected for the fourth time to provide a needed cushion, again on a deep pass.

"I'm not the fastest guy out there, but I've been taught to run great routes and I've got a great quarterback throwing to me," Floyd said. "I can get the job done, I guess."

In spectacular, go-to-the-ball fashion, when needed.

"Conner Floyd had a huge game and played great all tournament," said Brewer, whose grandfather and father both played college football at Texas. "That was pretty cool, coming out on the first play here in Kyle Field and throwing a touchdown."

A two-point conversion caught by Griffin Gilbert extended Lake Travis' lead to 42-33 before DeSoto added a late touchdown.

"We've always come up a little short in this tournament and never really got to play in the championship, and we came off that Red Bull loss in Dallas," said Floyd of another 7-on-7 tournament, where the Cavaliers lost in a game at the Cotton Bowl. "We had a lot of motivation coming into this tournament and DeSoto is kind of a rival or ours, because they beat us awhile back when Garrett [Gilbert] was playing, so we were out for revenge."

DeSoto cut the lead to 34-33 on Ryan Polite's pass to Austin Vincent, but the Eagles never held the lead. Polite found Demarcus Thompson for the final score.

Polite and Thompson had hooked up to tie the game at 21-21 on the first drive of the second half, with Antoinne Jimmerson catching the tying conversion pass.

Lake Travis built the lead back to 34-21. Brewer hit Tanner Gillette for a touchdown, and Zachary Streuling grabbed a tipped interception to set up Brewer for a touchdown throw to Turney Mauer.

"It looked like they were going to run away with it," said Polite, whose Eagles trailed 15-0 in the opening half. "My teammates always fight hard. You just keep doing what you do, and keep executing. We could have done it better, but we sent a message."

The Cavaliers, who have won three consecutive Class 4A state championships during the regular football season, took home their first 7-on-7 state title.

"Coming in here, we said we wanted to win it in 7-on-7 and in the regular season," Brewer said. "Basically, when we are competing in any event, we'd like to win it. My teammates played great today. I'm really happy I got to share this with my teammates."

Both teams had struggled through the championship bracket. DeSoto edged Houston Lamar 34-32 in its first game Saturday, and Lake Travis stopped a conversion attempt by Little Cypress-Mauriceville in the second round to win 46-45.

"The day was amazing and the defense stepped up more that I thought they would," Polite said of his Eagles. "People were sore and hurting. It took a lot to get here. I just wish we could have won it."

Brewer was equally proud of his squad.

"Every game was really tough," Brewer said. "The heat is beating down on everyone and it's really all mental from there. Once we got used to the heat, we kept going and picked it up a little bit."

In the consolation final, all-tournament selection Deauntre Smiley threw four touchdown passes to Chris Bean to lead Lufkin to a 50-39 victory over The Woodlands.

Devon Hightower's interception helped Lufkin build a 36-19 halftime edge. The Panthers scored on all five of their possessions in the opening half and forced The Woodlands to turn the ball over on downs on the first possession of the second half. A Smiley-to-Bean connection built the Panthers' lead to 42-19.

The Woodlands senior quarterback Joseph Schneider had three scoring passes to Taylor Bickford, the last of which provided the final score. The Highlanders were unable to convert on a two-point attempt, effectively ending a comeback bid.
