Fedora earns BV Coach honors
Published Sunday, February 08, 2009 6:05 AM

Lee Fedora was an All-Brazos Valley selection as a wide receiver for A&M Consolidated Tigers.

Now, he's Coach of the Year on The Eagle's 33rd Annual All-Brazos Valley Football Team.

Navasota lost only once and was state-ranked all season. The loss was in overtime against La Vega at the 3A Division I quarterfinal round.

"I remember waking up in the morning and checking the stats in The Eagle to see who did what," Fedora recalled. "It's funny how things work. I'm in Navasota and Ervin Lee, from here, he and I were always within a catch of each other. You're always checking to see where you rank."

He ranks at the top of Brazos Valley coaches this year, thanks to voting by his fellow coaches.

"I made all-state, but All-Brazos Valley meant a lot, because it was my home town," said Fedora. "You don't know how much this means to me. It's a great honor."

Joining a coaching fraternity that included his high school coach, Ross Rogers, made the honor even more special.

"Ross is one of the main guys and a mentor," said Fedora. "He's part of my family tree in coaching and knowing that he has won this award means a lot to be in that class."

Fedora becomes the second person, and the second this school calendar year, to make the team as the Coach of the Year after having been selected as a player. Jane Anne (Karasek) Giese of Caldwell accomplished that on the All-Brazos Valley Volleyball Team.

Like his team, Fedora faced a challenge. He was one of seven coaches who drew votes this year.

Navasota has a total of six players named to the first two teams, led by the pass-and-catch combination of quarterback Jacolby Stokes and wide receiver Brandal Jackson.

Stokes threw for 2,390 yards and 24 touchdowns. Jackson accounted for almost half of the yardage, with 1,069 yards and 16 touchdowns catches.

They led a total of six Rattler players on the first two teams.

District 24-3A had strong representation on the team, including Madisonville running back Chris Whaley. He played just nine games, battled injuries and dealt with a rebuilt offense that allowed opposing defenses to focus on him. Whaley still rushed for 1,910 yards and 24 touchdowns.

The other two backs led their teams three rounds into the playoffs, where each dropped close games. Ross Bishop averaged 10.1 yards per carry for the Franklin Lions, who reached the third round of the Division II Class 2A playoffs, losing in triple overtime to Newton.

LiDarral Bailey was listed as quarterback, but the Bremond senior was one of the best runners in the area, rushing for 2,026 yards and 34 TDs. He made the team as a utility back because of his versatile all-around play. Bremond's two losses were to state finalists.

St. Joseph wide receiver Chad Peevey and tight end Kyle Brightwell joined Jackson in receiver spots.

They run behind an offensive line that features three-time all-state selection Michael Brown of Lexington and Cameron's Tanner Andrews, who led the attack for a prolific Yeomen offense. Bryan center Fono Vakalahi anchored the Vikings' strong rushing attack. Crosstown rival Alex Veliz of A&M Consolidated and Burton's offensive tackle Jon Hodde, who led the Panthers to school's best playoff run, complete the line.

Brenham turned around a slow start to play a week longer than any other team in the Brazos Valley and the Cubs have three defensive starters -- linebacker Trenton Thomas and secondary players Jeremy Hall and Kendrick Washington.

All-state defensive back Whitley Reed played on a Normangee team that matched the school's best playoff run. Reed had seven interceptions. A&M Consolidated's Stafford Brantley, selected in the defensive backfield, was joined by teammate Taylor Kieschnick who made it at linebacker.

Class 3A all-state linebacker Nic Hammett, the 24-3A Defensive MVP, and Normangee's Dillon Wolfe complete the first-team linebackers. Hammett has a teammate on that defense in junior tackle Logan David.

The rest of the defensive front included Bremond's Trenton Anderson, who kept his play high despite more double teams as a senior, and by C.J. Goosby, Bryan's steady standout at defensive end.

Kyle Danford became Rudder's first All-Brazos Valley player, earning the first-team punter spot. Eight field goals from Consol's Matt Stoll made him the place-kicker. With four touchdowns on returns, Iola senior all-stater Slayton Murray is the kick returner.

Normangee quarterback Justin Mullinnix, and running backs Dexter Pratt of Navasota, Chad Wilburn from Brazos Christian and Kysan Woolverton of Caldwell made for an outstanding second-team backfield.

The Navasota Rattlers' other second-teamers were defensive lineman Lino Byrd, linebacker Eugene Castillo and receiver Gaston Lamascus. The Bryan Vikings placed three on the second team -- linebacker Curtis Cook, cornerback/safety Justin Hartgroves and punter Krey Bratsen.
