ENNIS -- A&M Consolidated junior wingback Quinton White needed just one carry to zip past the 1,000-yard barrier Friday night. It took the Tigers longer, but they pulled away in the second half to roar past McKinney Boyd into the third round of the state football playoffs.

The Tigers scored 21 consecutive points in the second half, riding a huge night from White and a swarming defense to defeat the Broncos 42-23 in a Class 5A Division I area-round game at Lion Memorial Stadium.

Consol (11-1) stretched its winning streak to 11 games and earned a spot in the Region II semifinal round next week. The Tigers will play the winner of Saturday afternoon's game between Round Rock Stony Point (11-0) and Klein Oak (8-2).

Boyd finished the season at 9-3.

White broke the Broncos with a pair of 80-yard touchdown runs, one on the game's first play from scrimmage. The speedster finished with three touchdowns and 185 yards on five carries, boosting his season rushing total to 1,149 yards and joining senior teammates Chris Nutall and Clinton Banks in the 1,000-yard club.

"Give credit to the offensive linemen," White said. "They did their part tonight. It's great to have three backs over 1,000 yards. That's spectacular and we couldn't do it without the linemen."

A strong night from the blockers helped the Tigers run for 438 yards against a Boyd defense that came into the game giving up 172 rushing yards per game. Consol attempted only four passes, completing none and having one interception returned for a touchdown, but the relentless running game and a strong defensive effort produced a comfortable win.

Boyd overcame an early 14-point deficit to pull within 21-16 at halftime, and the Broncos got the football with the strong breeze at their backs to start the third quarter. Consol's defense, which has often been victimized by big plays this season, limited the Broncos to two first downs on their first four possessions of the half.

Broncos quarterback Jonovan Griffin, who has committed to sign with Oklahoma State, missed a second game after breaking his collarbone in the regular-season finale. The Tigers hassled junior backup Tyler Phelps into 9-for-24 passing and returned an interception for a touchdown.

"The third quarter belonged to the defense," Consol coach Jim Slaughter said. "They did a great job. There's no doubt that we were helped by the fact that their quarterback wasn't in the game. At the same time, it was a great job by our kids."

Consol's offense provided the perfect balance in the third quarter, grinding away for yards and getting another long-distance score from White. The Tigers marched 80 yards in 16 plays on their first possession of the half, with Cedric Goodman's 1-yard run giving Consol a 28-16 lead.

When the Tigers got the ball back, White zoomed 80 yards on a slick counter play over left tackle, catching the Boyd defense leaning in the direction of a possible jet sweep to the right. White added a 7-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter as Consol regained command after letting the Broncos back into the game.

"Everybody thought we had the game won [leading 14-0], but that wasn't the case," White said. "We had to fight for it."

The game couldn't have started much better for Consol. After a touchback on the opening kickoff, the Tigers scored in one play as White raced 80 yards for a stunning touchdown. Going the same direction as the 86-yard score Consol allowed to start last week's game, White took a jet sweep handoff around left end, hesitated to make one defender miss and then took off.

Consol scored again in a hurry. Boyd faced a third down on its first possession when cornerback Ernest Payton returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown, stepping in front of a Phelps pass to tip it before gathering it in and heading for the end zone.

The Broncos took care of any thoughts of a rout by responding with an eight-play, 63-yard touchdown march. Wingback Kevin Dibia scored on a 25-yard run as Boyd pulled within 14-7 midway through the first quarter.

Boyd also scored on its next possession, with Taylor Symmank kicking a 33-yard field goal that made it 14-10.

The Tigers responded by going 71 yards in 13 plays that were mostly pounding runs between the tackles. Backup fullback Goodman gained 7 yards on fourth-and-1 from the 15-yard line, setting up a 2-yard score by Nutall.

Consol was attempting to extend the lead late in the half when quarterback Jacob Bronowski's pass was intercepted by linebacker Kyle Zimmerman, who sped 49 yards for a touchdown. The Broncos went for two points, but Phelps' pass was intercepted by Payton and the Tigers led 21-16 at halftime.
