ENNIS -- A&M Consolidated's five-year football playoff drought ended Friday night when the Tigers conjured up an amazing rain-maker.

Consol has long lived by the run and got 209 rushing yards from senior standout Chris Nutall, but the Tigers might not have beaten Tyler Lee 28-13 in the Class 5A Division I bi-district playoffs without a shocking touchdown pass.

Jacob Bronowski hooked up with tight end Matias Grande for a 19-yard score on fourth-and-1 late in the first half as the Tigers barged past the Red Raiders, who had eliminated Consol in each of the last two seasons.

The Tigers (10-1) earned their first postseason victory since 2005 and stopped a streak of four consecutive bi-district losses. Consol will return to Lion Memorial Stadium for an area-round matchup against McKinney Boyd (9-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Lee, one of two Texas teams to qualify for the 5A playoffs with eight losses, finished the season at 2-9.

Consol players and coaches lingered on the artificial surface after receiving the bi-district trophy following the game, soaking in the sweet taste of postseason success.

"It was a big win for the kids, a big win for the coaches, a big win for our program, a big win for me," Consol coach Jim Slaughter said. "We needed this. Bi-district had become like a monkey on our back.

"We've got a better football team than we've had some other years. This group of kids is playing well. If we get our defensive bunch settled in, we have a chance to make a run."

The Tigers marched to the District 12-5A championship on the strength of a relentless ground game. Consol continued to churn out yards against Lee, with Nutall sparking the team to 368 on the ground, but the Tigers also had surprising success through the air.

Junior quarterback Bronowski completed 5 of 5 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers built a 21-7 halftime lead on a cold, windy night.

"Teams prepare all week to stop the run and it puts them on their heels when we start to throw the ball a little bit, too," Bronowski said.

The most stunning pass was Grande's touchdown catch. The Tigers had recovered from an early Lee score to take a 14-7 edge before Lee's defense stuffed Bronowski on a third-and-1 quarterback sneak.

Then came offensive coordinator Stoney Pryor's wild fourth-down call. Bronowski faked a handoff and lofted an on-target pass to Grande, who was a couple of steps behind two Lee defenders. It was Grande's seventh catch of the season and the first touchdown reception of his career.

"That was a great call," Slaughter said. "Stoney gave me a choice between two plays, and he said that was the one he wanted and I agreed with him.

"When you get into the playoffs you've gotta be capable of throwing the ball. Lee pulled out a linebacker pretty early and put in a fifth lineman, and that was a signal to us that we had to start doing some things different."

Consol often stays with running plays even in third-and-long situations, which made the decision to throw even more out of character.

"It caught them off-guard," Bronowski said. "I wasn't expecting it either. They were biting down on us hard. Coach Pryor made the right decision and Matias made a great catch."

The Tigers absorbed a major blow on Lee's first offensive possession. Consol opened by driving 44 yards before the Red Raiders took over at their own 14. Sophomore LaQuintas Wallace took a seemingly simple run over left tackle and exploded through the secondary for an 86-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

It was an alarming start for a defense that allowed 94 points over the last two games of the regular season.

"We had some people that absolutely busted on that play," Slaughter said. "But after that they settled down and started playing."

Consol answered with a vital eight-play, 75-yard drive. Fullback Clinton Banks broke loose for 37 yards when the Tigers fooled Lee with a wrap-around draw on third-and-12. Consol got tricky again when Bronowski faked a handoff and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Chris Nutall.

Lee gave the Tigers an opening early in the second quarter when Wallace fumbled to stop a promising drive. Consol safety Cedrick McCan knocked the ball loose and Brett Mahnke pounced on it at the 25.

Three plays later the Tigers were in the end zone. Bronowski hooked up with Grande on a 49-yard gain that set up a nifty 26-yard touchdown run by Nutall.

Play-action passes work much better when teams have players, and the Tigers have one in Nutall. The senior gave Consol some much-needed breathing room with a terrific 84-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Nutall took a pitch around left end, tight-roped down the sideline in front of the Lee bench and took off, with receiver Cameron DeBesse shadow-blocking the final defender with a chance to make a tackle.

For the night, Nutall finished with 20 carries for 209 yards to go along with the touchdown catch. Junior wingback Quinton White gained 60 of his 73 yards in the second half, helping the Tigers overcome the loss of Banks, who injured his ankle in the first half and did not return.

Consol's defense limited the Red Raiders to 153 yards on the 52 plays Lee ran after Wallace's opening touchdown. Linebacker Carson Kieschnick and cornerback Chris Ceazer made interceptions to stop Lee's only possessions of the fourth quarter.
