One by land and the other by air, the A&M Consolidated and Belton offenses were coming Friday night.

They kept advancing throughout the football game to produce 105 points and 1,111 yards in a scoring extravaganza that produced a 56-49 Consol victory and gave the fans at Tigerland Stadium just about everything except a punt.

Consol (9-1, 7-0) captured the District 12-5A championship outright and pushed its winning streak to nine games. It is the Tigers' second outright district title in 11 seasons under head coach Jim Slaughter and the first time during his tenure that Consol has reached nine wins during the regular season.

The Tigers will play Tyler Lee in the Class 5A Division I bi-district playoffs at Ennis High School at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Lee (2-8, 2-3) earned the last playoff berth from 11-5A with a 44-28 victory over North Mesquite on Friday.

Belton (5-5, 5-2) missed a chance to tie for a share of the 12-5A championship. Belton will play Longview in the 5A Division II bracket.

Senior running back Chris Nutall ripped through the Belton defense for 295 yards and five touchdowns, helping Consol roll up 582 yards and withstand a big passing night by Belton quarterback David Ash. The University of Texas commit passed for 383 yards and four scores, adding two touchdown runs.

The numbers were like something from a video game, especially during the first half. Consol gained 398 yards and the teams combined for 658 in the first half, with the Tigers taking a 42-21 lead at intermission.

"The best offense wins," Nutall said. "It feels great. We came out ready to play and took care of our business. We did what we had to do."

Consol delivered three runners with more than 100 yards each for the second consecutive game. Senior fullback Clinton Banks had 119 yards on 17 carries, while junior wingback Quinton White added 104 on 11 rushes.

"Unfortunately we needed it tonight," Slaughter said. "I'm extremely pleased with the way the kids and coaches worked and played tonight. At the same time, we understand we have work to do."

The Tigers worked over the defense ranked next-to-last in the district, gaining an average of 9.8 yards per rushing attempt. Nutall finished with 23 carries, but he needed only 11 runs to gain 222 yards and score four touchdowns in the first half.

It was an amazing contrast to last year's meeting between the teams in Belton, where Consol was limited to 53 yards and one first down after losing its top two quarterbacks to knee injuries.

"You're not going to stop them," Belton coach Rodney Southern said. "They're the best running team I've seen in a long, long time."

Despite the scoring binge, defense and special teams played key roles during a crucial stretch late in the first half. Belton scored to pull within 28-21 and attempted an onside kick that the visitors recovered, only to have the possession negated by a penalty.

Belton's Tramaine Rose made a leaping catch of the high kick just after it covered the necessary 10 yards. However, the football went to Consol when officials ruled that Belton interfered with the Tigers' ability to complete a fair catch.

Consol scored on the next play, with Nutall racing 51 yards. The game's third touchdown in a span of 33 seconds on the clock gave the Tigers a 35-14 lead.

"That was big, big," Slaughter said. "We worked as hard this week on onside kicks and stuff like that as we ever have."

Belton saw a promising drive end on downs late in the half, but the visitors got the ball back deep in their own territory on an interception. Ash then made a costly mistake, under-throwing a pass that was picked off by cornerback Ernest Payton, whose 34-yard touchdown return pushed the lead to 42-21.

Ash completed 30 of 49 passes with two interceptions, including one by linebacker Carson Kieschnick on Belton's first pass.

"We're all going to be cussing the poor old defense, but that touchdown they scored right before halftime was big," Slaughter said.

Belton drove 81 yards in 17 plays to pull within 49-42 midway through the fourth quarter, but Consol answered with a 70-yard march that ended on Nutall's 11-yard touchdown. Belton scored again with 22 seconds left, but Consol receiver Andre Pittman recovered the ensuing onside kick.
