Consol easily tops Shoemaker

KILLEEN -- The A&M Consolidated football team's 52-14 victory over Killeen Shoemaker was good-looking enough that it deserved summation by an offensive lineman, a member of a species announcer Keith Jackson affectionately called the Big Uglies.

"We've got amazing running backs and then we all work as a unit in the offensive line," Consol center Dalton Downey said. "It's like a well-oiled machine. It feels great to just pound a team, to know you're wearing them down and they can't stop you."

Shoemaker stopped the Tigers once, holding a unit peppered with substitutes early in the fourth quarter and forcing Consol's first punt in eight quarters. However, the Tigers rushed for an amazing 584 yards to dominate the game at Leo Buckley Stadium on Friday night.

The Tigers rolled to their sixth consecutive victory, improving to 6-1 overall and keeping pace with Copperas Cove atop District 12-5A at 4-0. Shoemaker slipped to 0-7 and 0-4, unable to use a couple of big plays early to set the trap that Consol coach Jim Slaughter feared from a game perilously placed between key matchups against Bryan and Cove.

"This bunch is pretty good about listening and staying focused on the things you ask them to stay focused on," Slaughter said. "We talked about not overlooking this team all week and the kids listened and they responded."

The most powerful respondent was Consol's running game, which set a season-high in rushing yards even though senior fullback Clinton Banks, the district's leading rusher going into the game, did not play because of a tender ankle.

Senior running back Chris Nutall exploded for 221 yards on 21 carries, including an 84-yard touchdown that came while the Tigers were grabbing the game by the throat with 21 consecutive points in the second quarter. Senior C.J. Goodman allowed Consol coaches to save Banks for next week's game against Cove by pounding his way for 163 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Junior wingback Quinton White added 137 yards on eight attempts, crushing any Shoemaker comeback hopes with touchdown runs of 30 and 62 yards on his first two carries of the second half.

"Clinton was mad at me because he wanted to get in," Slaughter said. "That was big to have that kind of night, especially against the No. 2 defense in the district. We've got a good bunch."

Consol's relentless running game overwhelmed Shoemaker in the first half. Nutall rolled up 184 yards before intermission, when the Tigers went to the dressing room with 327 yards rushing on 31 carries.

That remarkable success on the ground allowed Consol to register 17 first downs in the first half and out-gain the Grey Wolves 338-115. The offensive outburst carried through the third quarter and extended the Tigers' streak without punting to seven consecutive quarters after Consol did not have to punt the previous week against Bryan.

A couple of big plays allowed Shoemaker to keep pace with Consol into the second quarter. The Tigers marched 56 yards to score on their first possession, but fumbled the ball away the next two times they got the ball. The second turnover bounced to defensive tackle Diomonic Crawford, who thundered 52 yards for a touchdown that made it 7-7.

Consol answered with another methodical drive, going 65 yards in 11 plays to score on an 8-yard run by Goodman, who made his second consecutive start in place Banks. However, Shoemaker's Johnny Jefferson returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards. After a pass interference penalty, Grey Wolves quarterback Jammie Blunt scored on a 3-yard sneak to make it 14-14.

The Tigers answered with a special-teams dazzler when White returned the next kickoff 80 yards, and Goodman reached the end zone from 5 yards on the ensuing play to put Consol ahead to stay. Sparked by the long returns, the teams combined for three touchdowns in a span of five plays.

Goodman tore through the middle of the defense to score next, breaking a couple of tackles on a 17-yard touchdown that gave him 88 yards in the half.

Nutall joined in the touchdown parade on the next possession, taking a pitch around right end and following a lead block by White to the sideline where he outran the defenders for an 84-yard score that made it 35-14.

The Tigers kept up the pressure in the second half. White zipped 30 yards for a touchdown as Consol marched 70 yards on the opening drive of the second half. Four plays later, Consol cornerback Ernest Payton made his first interception of the season, which set up White's 67-yard touchdown burst.

Consol's defense limited the Grey Wolves to 214 yards on 42 plays. Shoemaker managed just 63 yards rushing on 23 carries.

"All week long coach Slaughter kept telling us it was a trap game, not to fall asleep," Consol linebacker Carson Kieschnick said. "We came out rolling and just kept going."
