The Caldwell Hornets swarmed Merrill Green Stadium on Friday night, rolling up 521 rushing yards en route to a 42-6 victory over the Rudder Rangers in District 24-3A play.

Caldwell (4-1, 2-0) had 150-yard-plus performances from running backs Nelson Scott and Kysan Woolverton and defensively held Rudder (2-3, 0-2) to just 96 yards.

Rudder head coach C.M. Pier said his team got caught off guard early and was unable to bounce back.

"[The Hornets] were pumped up," Pier said. "They hit us right in the mouth, and we didn't respond. I take responsibility for that as the head coach."

Caldwell opened with a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Woolverton, who finished with 185 yards on 28 carries. Seeking a fast start, the Hornets recovered an onside kick following the score, then struck quickly when Scott dashed 49 yards for the touchdown on the second play of the series.

Scott finished with 155 yards on 13 carries, and his first touchdown put Rudder down 14-0 before the Ranger offense had touched the ball.

Then when Rudder got the ball, penalties cut short what looked to be a promising first possession. The Rangers drove into Hornet territory but were eventually forced to punt. Kyle Danford pinned the Hornets back at their own 15-yard line with a well-aimed punt, but as what proved to be the theme for the night, poor field position didn't slow Caldwell. The Hornets marched 85 yards on eight plays and opened a three-score lead on Woolverton's 1-yard TD dive in the opening seconds of the second quarter.

"The guys came out and did what they were supposed to do," Caldwell head coach Dale Williams said. "I'm very excited with how we executed tonight."

Rudder's next drive stalled out in Caldwell territory, and Danford again pinned the Hornets deep with another precision punt. Unfortunately for Rudder, Caldwell again put together a long drive, this time going 83 yards on seven plays with Scott picking up his second TD on a 21-yard run.

Caldwell's Josh Courtney scored on a 9-yard run right before the half and Woolverton scored his third touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

While the Hornet offense rolled up 577 total yards and 35 first downs, the Hornet defense held Rudder to four first downs and less than 100 yards. Rudder's lone offensive highlight came in the second half when Danford kept the ball on an option read and ran it 67 yards for a touchdown and the Rangers' only score.

"When you face a team like Caldwell, you have to be good on the line of scrimmage," Pier said. "They handled us pretty good on the line of scrimmage."

Williams said the win was important for his team with a key 24-3A matchup next week against Navasota.

"Everyone wants to win that district championship," Williams said. "In order for that to happen, you've got to win certain games. This was one of those games for us, and we've got another big one coming next week against Navasota. We played well tonight, but we're going to have to be great against Navasota just to give ourselves a chance."

Rudder also has a big challenge next week when the Rangers face Rockdale.

"These guys are pretty resilient," Pier said of his team. "I'm going to lay it out to them straight and I'm not going to lie to them. We've got to get better. We've got Rockdale coming, and some people say they're the best in the district. Our guys have pretty much met the challenges all season, and I feel confident that we're going to bounce back."
