CAMPBELL: Come Monday, we'll have realignment answers

The people who run college football's Bowl Championship Series would sell their souls for the kind of drama that the University Interscholastic League generates every other year.

Perhaps the only thing that would generate more buzz than district realignment speculation is the anticipation of the latest Apple product's release.

At 9 a.m. Monday, UIL executive director Dr. Charles Breithaupt will fill the role played by Steve Jobs. That's when the district assignments will finally be released.

It's fun when we speculate, but nothing you've read already -- or anything you're about to read -- is set in stone. The UIL cleverly keeps us guessing. It's just my turn to guess.

There are reasons to speculate on the direction that Bryan and A&M Consolidated might go. There are some classification changes and new schools that could alter the landscape in Austin suburbs. It's certainly possible that the Tigers and Vikings could head toward Conroe for district games.

But when in doubt, it's not bad to go with status quo.

Every school in 12-5A should remain in Class 5A. Killeen is still in 4A. The district number could change, but don't be surprised if the current lineup stays intact.

Barring some sort of astonishing shift in numbers that divide 3A and 4A, Rudder will move to Class 4A. Districts are drawn by organizing contiguous schools. That's why it's likely that the Rangers will be in a district that somewhat resembles the current 18-4A. Either Brenham or Huntsville, or possibly both, could be in with them.

As it did in 24-3A, Rudder could be the centerpiece school that holds that district together.

You could make a pretty good argument for keeping 24-3A the same if one team left. That would make it a six-team district. It's unlikely that it will happen though, because the Cameron Yoemen are probably headed to Class 2A.

The last cutoff line between 3A and 2A was at an enrollment of 430. Cameron turned in 421. The cutoff number rarely goes down, so Cameron is probably a safe 2A Division I team.

"For some, the mindset is that if you drop a classification, it will get easier, but that's not the case," Cameron football coach Rick Rhoades said. "Everybody in town is excited about moving down, but there are some great 2A programs out there and it is going to be very competitive in whichever classification you are in."

There are all kinds of places 3A schools could go, and it wouldn't be surprising the remaining five 24-3A teams moved in three directions. Madisonville probably expects to move, and the Mustangs usually move north with Fairfield and the Palestine schools. Crockett is expected to drop to 2A, so the Mustangs might fill a hole in that district..

Two different classifications are basically splitting into four in Class A and 2A football. That will almost certainly set up different districts for football and all other sports, which won't use the split-classification plan. Class A may be used to that, but it can make scheduling for both volleyball and football a strain.

Burton coach Clinton Smith, whose team will be in Class A Division II, had no small schools to his south in his old district. Burton will almost certainly turn north. Somerville could be a borderline school but would likely continue to play Burton in district if the Yeguas are in Division II. Snook is also coming in, and Smith assumes his team will face the Blue Jays.

"I figure Mart or Alto or anybody else that has won a state championship will be in there with us," Normangee's Brian Mullinnix cracked.

He's had that before, with state champs and runners-up in his district, but as a Division I school, Normangee might replace Burton and go far to the south. They've been there before, too.

Mike Hedrick of Franklin, who predicts his Lions will be in Class 2A Division II, says he seen some online speculation.

"The Padilla Poll had us in with Centerville, Leon, Buffalo, Hearne and Rosebud-Lott," Hedrick said. "Another one had us going west with Rogers, Jarrell and Rosebud, but who knows?"

What Class 2A and A coaches agree on is that most deserve to have six-team districts. With only two teams advancing to the playoffs, they think that eight-team districts would be unfair.

One thing Class 2A and A teams should do is keep the buses gassed up. They're going to have at least one or two really long road trips during football season.

He is taking over the under-17 women's national team, preparing them for the pre-World Cup tournament to be held in San José, Costa Rica, March 10-28.

If his team qualifies, they will play at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup held in Trinidad & Tobago in September 2011.
