The Bryan Vikings' defense held Harker Heights' Kerry Sloan to 17 yards rushing in the second half Friday night at Merrill Green Stadium.

The Knights' defense had no such luck with Nate Jones.

Jones, a junior, rushed for a career-high 258 yards and scored three touchdowns as Bryan clinched its first playoff spot since 2007 with a 41-27 victory over Harker Heights

Bryan trailed at halftime, 21-20, but scored on Jones' tackle-breaking 38-yard jaunt on the first possession of the second half, in which he left potential tacklers laid out on the field in his wake. Jones had four of the five carries on the 65-yard drive, and his touchdown, with 6:55 left, gave the Vikes the lead for good.

The Bryan defense, which allowed 192 first-half yards, gave up just 67 in the second half. A fumble-plagued Harker Heights offense helped, but the fast-closing Vikings caused most of the problems.

"When we came out, we said we are fixing to go end this thing," Bryan coach Bob Bellard said. "We've got to get some stops and then we've got to go punish them, go get them down."

They did.

With a 4-2 district record and 5-4 overall mark, Bryan will represent 12-5A as the second Division I team.

"I told the team before we went out, 'Hey, this is a pre-playoff game,'" said Vikings safety and leading tackler Johnnie Goosby. "This determines if you do or die. If you can't give it all you've got, we won't make it far. Everything is on the line and this is it. You just go do it."

Bryan coach Bob Bellard and many of his assistants were dunked with water after the game as the Vikings' seniors celebrated what will likely be their final game at Merrill Green Stadium.

"It's our last time on this field and it's a time to remember," Goosby said. "Everybody got together and we walked the field."

In a head-to-head showdown between two of the district's top backs, Jones took the rushing lead away from Sloan by slicing, pounding, spinning and racing for his yards behind a strong surge from Bryan's offensive line.

"He's as good as there is," Bellard said. "He attacks the line of scrimmage and makes you pay in the open grass. He's a tough inside runner, but in the open field he's pretty dadgum good, too. He's knows one speed and makes slashing cuts. He's always going vertical."

Jones exceeded 200 yards rushing for the third time in District 12-5A play. Jones carried six times on a nine-play, 71-yard drive that he capped with a 5-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Vikings, using backups late in the fourth quarter, scored and allowed a touchdown. Michael Roy finished off a drive set up by another run from Jones. Sloan's TD run concluded the scoring with 16 seconds left in the game.

The difference in the game in the first half was a missed extra point on the Vikings' opening touchdown. Place-kicker Krey Bratsen clanged the ball hard off the left upright.

There were six lead changes before halftime.

Harker Heights started Greg Haynes at quarterback, and the waterbug-quick sophomore caused early problems for Bryan. He ran for 20 yards and converted on a third-down pass before Sloan ran the final two yards on an 8-play, 75-yard drive. For the night, Sloan had 21 carries for 97 yards rushing, with Hanes getting 97 on 21 tries.

"Golly, [Hanes is] quick and explosive and we lost containment and made it easy on him at times," Bellard said. "When you put all of the receivers on one side and everybody goes one direction, you've got one dude out on the backside and he's got to handle him, and it puts him in the bind. Their fumble play, where he just takes off, was one of their better plays."

Bryan answered three plays later, when Kesnick Taylor ran an option keeper to his right and outsped the Knights' secondary into the end zone.

"That was a perfectly executed veer play and well-blocked," Bellard said. "Bratsen had his best night blocking downfield and doing all of that kind of stuff."

Taylor had touchdown runs of 65 and 7 yards in the opening half for Bryan, which never punted in the game.

Harker Heights junior linebacker Tyler Babb recovered a fumble at midfield to set up the Knights' go-ahead touchdown. Sloan, in the quarterback spot, passed to a wide-open Kendric Smith at the goal line with 45 seconds left until halftime.
