The Bryan Vikings scored three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 28-7 halftime lead and eased to a 42-21 victory over the Shoemaker Grey Wolves on Friday at Merrill Green Stadium.
Bryan scored twice in a span of 1 minute, 56 seconds to take control in the first half of its Homecoming game. After forcing the Grey Wolves to punt, the Vikings moved 52 yards in five plays. Senior receiver Krey Bratsen, who started the drive with a 12-yard reverse, ended it by catching a pass on a slant pattern from Kesnick Taylor. The scored gave the Vikings a three-touchdown edge with 1:57 left in the first half.
"We've done that in all four football games, getting a touchdown right before half," Bryan coach Bob Bellard said. "In high school football, there are a lot of ways you can kill the clock. If you want to be able to run and pass in that situation, you've got to go make some plays. We've hit some plays, both running and throwing the football."
Bryan stayed in control for most of the game despite the efforts of Grey Wolves junior quarterback Darrien Nicholas, who completed 15 of 27 passes for 182 yards and the game's final touchdown, a 40-yard strike to Vincent Fuller.
Fuller caught seven passes for 119 yards and was complemented by the running of James Williamson, who prospered on a steady diet of draw plays. Williams had 107 yards rushing and scored the Shoemaker touchdown that briefly cut the lead to 28-14.
Bryan looked ready to put the game out of reach early in the second half but Chris Watson, struggling for extra yardage, was stripped of the ball for Bryan's only turnover. Stephan Young recovered for Shoemaker at the 27, and the Grey Wolves drove nine plays to score. A fourth-down pass interference call in the end zone kept the drive alive, and Williams inched across the goal line from a yard out.
Kevin Jefferson's 65-yard kickoff return made Bryan's clinching touchdown drive a short one. Nate Jones went the final three yards to the end zone with 3:12 left in the third quarter, and Bryan rested its offensive starters the remainder of the game.
"We had a lot of different guys touch the football tonight," Bellard said. "We need to get Joseph Bryant the ball more. He caught one pass, made a move and got a first down. He did a nice job of blocking downfield, too."
Bryan overcame a chop block penalty on its third touchdown drive, finishing it with a screen play to Mike Martinez, who was called for the penalty. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound tight end barreled down the left sideline on his only reception, a 15-yard gain.
"The guys did a good job out in front of him and I don't know if anybody really wanted a piece of him," Bellard said, smiling.
It was a night of many happy returns on Homecoming. Bryan got a 58-yard kickoff return from Bratsen to set up its first score of the second period. It took just two plays for Chris Watson to navigate the final 25 yards, scoring on his second carry from the 2. It was Watson's second touchdown, as he also finished off a 12-play, 79-yard march on Bryan's opening possession.
That initial drive took 6:27 off the clock, and Shoemaker almost finished off the opening quarter. Nicholas concluded a 12-play, 55-yard push when he rolled right and touched down the ball just inside the pylon.
Bryan's reserves fashioned the final drive. After Jefferson knocked down a fourth-down Shoemaker pass in the Vikings' end zone, Bryan took over at the 15. Michael Roy carried seven times and Antonio Ootsey capped it with a 7-yard run on a wingback reverse that gave the Vikings a 42-14 lead with 6:06 left.
