Former A&M Consolidated coach Ross Rogers and Pflugerville Connally's Howard McMahan are finalists to be the Bryan Vikings' next head football coach.

One of them is expected to be hired at the Bryan ISD board meeting Monday. They also will serve as Bryan High's athletics coordinator.

The Bryan job came open when Bob Bellard resigned after Bryan finished last season at 4-6. Bellard went 32-31 over his six seasons at Bryan.

"I talked to [Bryan ISD athletics director] Harry Francis when it came open after Bob's deal, and said if you're interested in me -- I don't know if you are -- but I'd like to talk to you," Rogers said. "Harry and I have been friends a long time, and I kind of left it like that. I found out later that there might be some interest, and that is how it has progressed."

McMahan, the second head coach at Connally since the school opened in 1996, led the Cougars to an 8-3 record last season. Connally played in District 16-4A with Rudder the last two seasons, winning the district in 2010. He led Connally to the playoffs in his first season in 2007.

Prior to that, McMahan served as defensive coordinator at Copperas Cove, where he worked under head coach Jack Welch from 2002-07. McMahan also served as assistant athletics director at Copperas Cove.

McMahan has also been an assistant coach in college football at Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee State.

McMahan did not return phone messages left for him.

Rogers joined his father Gene as inductees into the Texas High School Coaches Association's Hall of Honor this summer. Gene was the long-time coach at Killeen High. Between them, the father-son coaches have won 400 games.

"I felt like I was a good friend of Bob's and I never thought this would actually come open, but I've always got an interest," said Rogers, who has a home at Briarcrest Country Club. "I do live here in Bryan and you know, I was raised in a field house. I've never been very far from a field house. I think I've got a lot to give, and I think the staff I would put together would be outstanding. Hopefully, I'm given that opportunity. Maybe we'll know Monday."

Rogers has coached teams to the playoffs in 16 seasons. He won the Class 4A state championship in 1989 with Consol, which also reached the finals two other times.

Rogers was one of the state's youngest head coaches when he began his career in 1977 at Hempstead. He had at least one 10-win season at three -- Waller, Consol, Harker Heights -- of his other four high school stops. His Giddings Buffaloes went 7-3 the year before Consol hired him. From 1989-92, the Tigers posted four straight 14-win seasons, a state record.

Rogers was an assistant coach at Southwest Texas State from 1983-86. He indicated he might return to coaching in 2010 when he applied for the Sam Houston State job, which eventually went to Willie Fritz.

"I think I've got a better picture of the Bryan landscape than some others, and certainly that would lend itself to a good jump start," said Rogers, who has been a regional salesman for Riddell Sports, Inc. since his retirement. "I hope that's what the administration at Bryan is looking at. Other than Harker Heights, all of my coaching stops have been in the Brazos Valley."

Both coaches have had their best success in 4A. In Connally's two seasons in 5A, the Cougars went 5-15 with one of the smallest enrollments in the classification.

First-year Killeen Shoemaker head coach Channon Hall provides a link between Rogers and McMahan. Hall played for Rogers at A&M Consolidated and was an assistant coach with Rogers at Harker Heights. Roger recommended Hall to McMahan and Hall served as offensive coordinator with the Cougars before departing for Shoemaker.
