The Bryan Vikings had their second-team players in the game Friday against Killeen Shoemaker before the third quarter ended.
It could have been earlier.
On a night when Bryan's offensive execution was outstanding in a 42-21 win over the Grey Wolves, it was the Vikings' only mistake that delayed the backup players' participation. Bryan's one turnover was a Chris Watson fumble on the Vikings' opening offensive possession of the second half.
"It's a situation where we were fixing to go up 35-7 and you can empty the bench at that point in time," Bryan coach Bob Bellard said. Shoemaker scored to cut the lead to 28-14 after the fumble.
When they got in, the backups delivered. With mostly second-team Bryan players on each side of the ball, the Vikings and Grey Wolves played even, with each team scoring a touchdown. That included a 12-play, 85-yard drive for a touchdown in the fourth quarter by the Vikings.
In the game, Bryan had nine players get carries and four different receivers catch passes, all in the opening half. After Kesnick Taylor completed 4 of 7 passes for 47 yards and a touchdown by halftime, the Vikings did not throw another pass. His last throw of the first half was a touchdown to Krey Bratsen. It was Taylor's fifth scoring pass this season, and he has not thrown an interception.
"He managed the game really well," Bellard said of his senior quarterback. "He handled the screen passes, hit the screens well and made some key third downs early. The biggest thing is that he got the ball dispersed where he needed. Again, it goes back to the offensive line. They put you in position to make plays."
Michael Roy had seven carries for 44 yards on Bryan's last touchdown drive. Junior quarterback Aaron Eike ran for 21 yards and sophomore Jamarcus Satchell had 16 yards rushing.
"We feel pretty good about those backup running backs we've got," Bellard said. "Satchell is going to be a great player. We've got to get Kevin Jefferson (who had a 65-yard return) the football some more, besides just returns."
Bryan's defense, despite allowing 357 total yards, had key stops and got an 18-tackle game from safety Johnnie Goosby. Two of those stops saved touchdowns.
"It's not because we're getting whipped physically and it's not because we don't somebody there accountable," Bellard said of the defensive troubles. "It's because we make a mistake. ... On the plus side, there were two times we got them stopped on downs and those were big plays."
