Cypress Christian 13, Brazos Christian 0

HOUSTON -- The Brazos Christian Eagles fell in their season opener 13-0 to Cypress Christian on Friday.

Brad Brown led Brazos Christian with 55 rushing yards on five carries. Jaxton McNair added 38 yards.

Aaron Mitchell provided a spark at the end of the first quarter when he blocked a Cypress field goal attempt. Michael Paine recovered the ball for the Eagles.

Brittain Bost led Brazos Christian with eight tackles. Mark Norman and Brad Brown added seven tackles each. Norman also blocked a PAT attempt. The Eagles' Hunter Beck had an interception and Ethan Mitchell recovered a fumble.

Brazos Christian hosts Snook next Friday.

Iola 43, St. Joseph 20

Chase Cammack rushed for 110 yards and Bobby Pointer scored on his first three carries to power the Iola Bulldogs to a 43-20 victory over the St. Joseph Eagles on Friday night at the St. Joseph Athletic Complex.

The high school football season opener featured a pair of interception returns for touchdowns with Iola's Brady Beene going 50 yards for one, and St. Joseph's Grant Lipscomb returing one 57 yards.

Iola's ground game was too powerful as the Bulldogs won for the first time since last year's 38-21 season-opening victory over St. Joseph. Cammack had 110 yards on 17 carries, including a 16-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. Zach Willis added 82 yards on 11 carries including a 10-yard score with 26 seconds left in the game. Pointer had 75 yards rushing, scoring on runs of 4, 31 and 22 yards. Pointer also had 10 tackles on defense as did Clayton Keller, while Devin Espinosa led the Bulldogs with 11.

Garrett Brightwell had touchdown catches of 34 and 38 yards from Landon Evans for St. Joseph.

Cameron 52, Waco Connally 7

WACO -- Cameron found offensive balance in its season-opener against Waco Connally, rushing for 235 yards and throwing for 138 in a 52-7 victory.

The Yoemen scored 35 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 42-0 halftime lead.

Just a minute after his second touchdown catch, Cameron's D.D. Westbrook intercepted Connally quarterback Jordan Pruitt and returned it 61 yards for a 21-0 lead. Quarterback Jack Rhoades connected with Thomas Rinn for two TDs before Damyon Kelley's 63-yard score wrapped up the first-half scoring. Kelley had 122 yards on eight carries.

Justin Sapp caught a seven-yard score in the third.

Martin Rodriguez kicked a 30-yard field goal and converted 7 of 7 PAT kicks.

Rhoades went 12-for-19 passing for 139 yards in the game, adding 32 rushing yards. Westbrook finished with six grabs for 62 yards, while Rinn had four for 64.

Cameron will host La Vega next Friday.

Buffalo 14, Bremond 10

BUFFALO -- The Bremond Tigers fell in a close game to Buffalo 14-10 in the season opener.

The Bison scored first on a 17-yard pass from Ryan Read to Garret Henson.

The Tigers cut Buffalo's lead to 7-3 with 15 seconds left in the first half on Dylon Lindley's 22-yard field goal.

After a scoreless third quarter, Bremond took the lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jonathon White and Lindley's extra-point kick.

The lead didn't last long as Buffalo answered on the ensuing possession. Read threw a 51-yard pass to Travis Cunningham to help set up Aurelio Dominguez's 6-yard TD run.

Dominguez then intercepted a Bremond pass on the final drive with 1:08 left to clinch the victory.

The Bremond Tigers leaned on a solid running game with White rushing for 100 yards and Justin Kinney rushing for 92 yards.

Bremond hosts Leon next week.

Grapeland 18, Centerville 15

GRAPELAND -- The Centerville Tigers took the lead twice but couldn't contain the Grapeland passing attack in a season-opening loss.

Centerville quarterback Garrett Chase found Seth Mahaffey for a 30-yard touchdown pass with 8:25 left in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

After Grapeland scored on a long pass, Chase found Anthony Taylor for a 14-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to take a 13-6 lead after the kick failed. Grapeland answered with two more touchdowns, and Centerville's late safety couldn't close the gap.

Centerville (0-1) will host Teague next week.

Rockdale 58, Austin Eastside Memorial 0

ROCKDALE -- The Rockdale Tigers had plenty to celebrate Friday as they opened the season with a 58-0 shutout of Austin Eastside Memorial.

Rockdale's running backs Daniel Brooks and Tarrel Dixon combined for three rushing touchdowns in the opening quarter to set the tone. They each rushed for another TD in the second quarter, while quarterback Ethan Brinkley hit Dixon for a 15-yard TD pass to give Rockdale a 39-0 halftime lead.

Rockdale didn't let up in the second half, getting touchdowns from Jared Carpenter, Dixon and Jimmy Palmo.

Rockdale will host Salado next week.

Brenham 28, Huntsville 0

HUNTSVILLE -- The third-ranked Brenham Cubs opened their defense of the Class 4A Region III crown with exactly that -- a whole lot of defense.

Brenham forced four turnovers -- including an interception that senior defensive end Christian McBride returned 28 yards for a touchdown -- in a 28-2 victory over the Huntsville Hornets at Bowers Stadium.

Huntsville, which averaged less than 2 yards per carry and finished with 167 yards of total offense, scored its only points of the night when its defense stopped Brenham running back Troy Green in the end zone for a safety.

But Green had the last laugh, breaking to the outside for a 68-yard touchdown on the Cubs' next possession. That score would give the Cubs a 14-2 lead heading into the second quarter, and Green would finish the night with 144 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.

Brenham opened its 2010 season with a bang, forcing Huntsville to punt before marching 52 yards for its first touchdown of the season. After four consecutive carries by Green, the Cubs took to the air, as quarterback Ty Schlottmann connected with Texas Tech commit Derek Edwards for 8 yards before finding Tre'mund Moore on a 22-yard fade route in the end zone.

The game marked Brenham's first contest since playing for the Class 4A Division II state championship in December.

Caldwell 26, Bellville 0

CALDWELL -- The Caldwell Hornet offense pounded the Bellville Brahmas for 300 yards on the ground while the defense stifled the visitors for a 26-0 victory in the season opener.

Caldwell quarterback D.J. Cumby threw the ball just five times, completing two of them. Those two completions went for more yards (98) than the Hornets' defense allowed (89 yards).

Kedrin Sheppard was the workhorse for Caldwell, taking 23 handoffs for 172 yards and scoring all four of the Hornets' touchdowns on runs of 3, 3, 6 and 23 yards. Ricky Bruno added 55 yards on 17 carries.

Anthony Gutierrez had one reception for 64 yards, while DeAndre Burns had the other Caldwell reception for 34 yards.

The Hornets, No. 13 in the Harris Ratings, will host Austin Crockett next Friday.

Burton 47, Weimar 44

WEIMAR -- Juwan Mathis hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Xavier Bethany with 8 seconds remaining in the game to defeat the Weimar Wildcats 47-44.

Burton hosts Somerville on Friday.

Lexington 60, Smithville 0

LEXINGTON -- Xavier Ward and Josh Murray each scored three touchdowns to lead the Lexington Eagles to a 60-0 rout of Smithville.

Ward rushed for three touchdowns -- 63, one and 31 yards -- and Josh Murray caught touchdown passes of eight and 80 yards from Kogan Garrett in the first half.

Murray added a 10-yard run in the third quarter.

Garrett also connected with Rhiem Petterson for a four-yard touchdown and scored on a two-yard run. The Eagles' final TD came on a Jason Washington 48-yard run.

Ward finished with 172 yards rushing on 18 carries, while Garrett was 14 of 22 for 230 yards. Murray was on the receiving end of four of those completions, accounting for 119 yards.

Lexington held Smithville to 69 yards on 55 snaps.

The Eagles will travel to Blanco on Friday.

Leon 29, Elkhart 6

LEON -- Four different rushers scored touchdowns and Garrett Robinson capped Leon's scoring with a 26-yard field goal to lead the Cougars to a 29-6 victory over Elkhart.

Hector Rivera scored from 19 yards and Cory Whimire from 9 yards in the first quarter. Quarterback Kirby Watson tallied from 9 yards out in the second quarter and Tyler Sills went over from the 3 in the third quarter.

The Cougars rushed for 311 yards, ed by Rivera's 102 on 12 carries. Jon Hayes had 84 yard son seven carries and Whitmire totaled 59 on seven carries.

Watson completed 4 of 7 passes for 67 yards. Three of the completions went to Whitmire for 56 yards.

Elkhart's only score came on a 70-yard punt return with 3:35 remaining in the game.

Leon travels to Bremond, a 14-10 loser to Buffalo, on Friday.

Brenham Christian 44, Allen Academy 0

The Allen Academy Rams struggled from the start, losing their season-opener to Brenham Christian 44-0 on Friday night.

Offensively, Matt Schieffer had 25 carries for 102 yards, as well as the lone completion for the Rams. On defense, Jacob Clanton had an interception and John Brien forced and recovered a fumble.

Allen Academy will host Tomball Christian JV next Friday.
