Eagle Staff Report

CALDWELL -- Caldwell's comeback bid was snubbed as Bellville escaped with a 28-26 victory Friday night.

Despite outscoring Bellville 12-0 in the fourth quarter, the Hornets couldn't finish the job. Kedrin Sheppard caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback DJ Cumby late in the fourth quarter, but the extra point missed and left the score 28-20.

Caldwell recovered the ensuing onside kick and scored with 3:36 remaining, but the two-point attempt was stopped on the ground. Caldwell later fumbled with 30 seconds left to end the game.

Kysan Woolverton led the Hornets with 132 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Cumby was 7 for 12 with 104 yards and a touchdown, and kicker Trent Meckel was 2 for 3 on PATs.

Josh Browning's third quarter touchdown runs of 21 and 46 yards were the difference for Bellville.

Caldwell plays at Shepherd at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
