After Rudder's girls basketball team lost at Cedar Ridge one month ago the Lady Rangers went into the second round of District 16-4A play determined to make the rematch a championship game.

Rudder (30-5, 14-1) did its part, winning seven consecutive games going into its regular-season finale against Cedar Ridge at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Rudder's gymnasium. However, Cedar Ridge (25-9, 12-3) did not hold up its end of the deal, falling two games behind.

The Lady Rangers clinched their second consecutive 16-4A championship by winning Friday at Manor while Cedar Ridge was losing to fifth-place Pflugerville Hendrickson.

"We were really hoping that it was going to come down to the last game between us [for the district championship]," Rudder coach Michael Stenseth said. "I felt it would help my team if we really knew that we were playing with something riding on the game."

Instead of a district title, Rudder will play for revenge and to gain momentum going into the playoffs. Cedar Ridge snapped Rudder's 23-game district winning streak at the 4A level by beating the Lady Rangers 54-48 on Jan. 6. It was Rudder's first game without forward Fatima Adams, who missed five games because of what Stenseth called team issues, and second after losing point guard Alycia Ayers to a season-ending knee injury.

"I think we'll be a little more motivated," Stenseth said. "We know we did not play well and we did not have all our weapons that night. They played very well and shot well."

The Lady Rangers are ranked 13th by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Rudder's other four losses came against teams that will make the Class 5A playoffs: second-ranked Pflugerville, Killeen Ellison, Temple and A&M Consolidated.

Rudder will face Lancaster in the first round of the playoffs. Lancaster (16-10, 9-6) is locked in as the fourth seed from 15-4A.

Consol could be headed for coin flip: The A&M Consolidated and Temple girls will go into the last night of the regular season tied for second place in 12-5A. Consol (24-9, 10-3) will play host to Belton (8-23, 2-11). Temple (26-8, 10-3) will visit Bryan (2-26, 0-13).

If they tie, coaches from Consol and Temple both prefer to flip for the second seed instead of playing an extra game. The flip would be held Tuesday night after both teams finish.

Here's what figures to be at stake: The winner will get the No. 2 seed and face the third team from 11-5A, either Mesquite or Tyler Lee. Both teams are 5-4 in district going into Lee's visit to Mesquite on Tuesday. The loser of the flip will be the No. 3 seed and will open the playoffs against 11-5A runner-up Mesquite Horn (15-14, 7-2), which will play 10th-ranked DeSoto on Tuesday.

Consol is coming off a 59-33 loss at eighth-ranked Harker Heights on Friday.

"I didn't feel like we competed well as a group, and that's very rare for us," Consol coach Karen Heintz said. "We played a good first quarter, but we did not perform well in the second quarter. You get down a bunch to somebody like that on their home floor on Senior Night, it's tough."

Down to the wire: Winners of most district girls basketball races in the Brazos Valley have been determined. Here's the status of some of the area's most successful teams:

20-3A -- The 17th-ranked Madisonville Lady Mustangs (23-8, 9-0) have locked up the championship going into their visit to second-place Fairfield (25-8, 7-2), which made the state tournament last year.

23-3A -- Ninth-ranked Giddings (30-5, 9-0) also clinched the title before going on the road to face its closest competitor. Giddings will visit 18th-ranked Navasota (26-7, 7-2), which lost a chance to play for a share of the district championship with a 43-39 overtime loss at Smithville on Friday.

14-2A -- Buffalo (25-7, 10-1) and Leon (18-8, 10-1) are tied for the league lead with both playing teams out of the playoff race. Buffalo will be at fourth-place Mildred (18-10, 6-5) while Leon visits fifth-place Teague (17-12, 4-7).

23-2A -- No. 12 Centerville (26-3, 11-0) has a two-game lead over Crockett and will finish the regular season against last-place Onalaska (0-11 district).

26-A Division I -- Snook, which reached the Region IV final last season, may be underrated at No. 21 by the TABC. The Lady Jays (23-8, 9-0) have a three-game cushion as they go on the road to face Mumford (17-9, 5-4). Mumford has a one-game lead over Somerville (16-10, 4-5) for the third and final playoff berth. Somerville will finish against last-place Burton (3-15, 1-8).
