AUSTIN -- The greatest season in the history of the Mumford boys basketball program had an excruciating ending.

Shots that typically fell didn't. The team's patent scoring spurts fueled by great defense never materialized. It added up to a long, frustrating Saturday afternoon for the Mustangs and their fans as the Spurger Pirates grabbed a 64-54 victory in the Class A Division I regional championship at the Delco Center.

So unheralded Spurger (27-5), not second-ranked Mumford (33-3), will be making its first trip to the state tournament. The 25th-ranked Pirates will be joined by Gruver, Cayuga and Bronte at the Erwin Center for Friday's semifinal games.

The high-powered Mustangs, who had won 27 straight games, scored baskets on back-to-back possessions just once Saturday. Spurger did a good job collapsing when the ball went in to Mumford senior post Luke Scamardo, and the Pirates always knew where senior guard Eric Corona was.

"We struggled to score," Mumford head coach Chris Sodek said. "The pace of the game stayed slow, because there were moments we had a layup, but we couldn't convert."

It wasn't just layups.

Mumford made 15 of 59 shots (24.4 percent) from the field, including only 3 of 29 on 3-pointers (10.3 percent). No Mustang shot 50 percent.

"We never got going," Sodek said. "We got close when it was 21-20."

That was early in the second half, when Efrain Sanchez drove the baseline to give the Mustangs their first lead since early in the game. But Spurger answered with a 10-1 run keyed by 3-pointers from Chase McGallion and Jarom Odom.

"That hurt," Sodek said.

Spurger was having just as tough a time shooting until then.

That's when the Pirates did a good job taking the ball into the paint against Mumford's aggressive defense and passing it out to the wings.

Spurger hit all five 3-pointers it attempted in the third quarter for a 40-33 lead.

"They were really good at shooting from the corner," Sodek said. "Which against us, that's a tough shot, and we'll usually give [teams] that. They just knocked shots down, give them credit. They were better today."

Those 3-pointers wiped out Mumford's best defensive plays of the game. Corona scored 10 points in the third quarter as Mumford forced five turnovers, converting four into points.

Corona hit a pair of free throws with 1:28 left to pull Mumford within 34-33, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Daniel Blankenship to end the quarter keyed 11 unanswered points.

"I knew whoever was going to win this game was who played their style," Spurger head coach Calobe Isaacs said. "We try to slow it down and pass it around and not just go up and down the court real fast, which is what Mumford likes to do. I felt like we controlled the game and played our game."

Spurger would rather score from close range, but Isaacs makes his players hit 100 to 150 3-pointers each week in practice, which paid off as Spurger was 8 of 17 from long range.

Mumford prolonged the game by forcing Spurger to shoot 28 free throws in the final quarter. That offered a glimmer of hope when Spurger missed six of seven in one stretch, but Mumford missed a 3-pointer with 1:15 left that would have made it 57-51.

Missed free throws actually hurt Mumford more than missed 3-pointers. Mumford missed four in the telling third quarter and was 21 for 36 overall.

"We shot free throws a whole lot better lately," Sodek said. "But today, we really struggled from the free-throw line."

Corona finished with 18 points. Matt Williams and Scamardo each added 11. Scamardo added nine rebounds and six blocks.

Blankenship had 29 points, but was only 8 of 22 from the field. He also had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Spurger had a 48-39 rebounding edge by putting several bodies on the taller Scamardo. Mumford moved Corona inside in the fourth quarter looking for more offense, but the Pirates just fouled if a Mustang got in position to score close to the hoop.

"We knew we had to rebound," Isaacs said.

Spurger managed a 20-17 halftime lead, but the Pirates had kept a bridle on the Mustang offense at a huge cost by committing 15 fouls. That didn't come back to hurt Spurger, which didn't lose a starter to fouls.

"All season long, we've learned how to play without key kids," Isaacs said.

Sodek was proud of the seven-player senior class that established every school record, including the program's first regional victory -- 76-64 over previously unbeaten Sabinal on Friday.

"We were in a dogfight yesterday," Sodek said. "We had some kids cramping up, but we were ready to play today. We felt good when we were out there, Spurger just took it to us."

Spurger was the only Class A team to beat Mumford, which fell to 2A Hearne and 3A Madisonville.
