If the District 12-5A championship trophy arrives with a few dents and dings, you will hear no complaints from the Bryan Lady Vikings.

It will remind them of how they earned it.

Bryan withstood Temple's physical defense with its own aggressive shut-down style, avenging its only district defeat with a 51-29 victory to clinch the district championship.

"You are going to face that in the playoffs," said Bryan coach Beth Jesurun of Temple's defense. "They are a good team to prepare you for the playoffs because they are physical and they're aggressive, and they're very good athletically."

Temple, which won the first meeting in overtime, 46-42, hit just two shots from the field in the first half Saturday and two in the fourth quarter, where Bryan put the game away in that final 8 minutes with a 15-1 run.

The victory gave the Lady Vikings the league crown with a 12-1 record. Bryan is 29-2 overall and concluded its home schedule without a loss.

Temple (21-9, 10-3) retained second place but has not yet locked up the second playoff spot. The Tem-Cats need a win at Harker Heights or a Copperas Cove loss at A&M Consolidated on Tuesday accomplish that.

"Defensively, we played real well, but offensively, we weren't quite patient enough at times," Jesurun said. "We were maybe a little bit tight, knowing you are playing your last senior home game and all of your parents are here. We're glad to get it out of the way and win the district title."

The Lady Vikings handed flowers to their parents prior to the game, but once the contest tipped off they were more inclined to take things away. Bryan was never seriously threatened after forcing Temple into eight first-quarter turnovers and turning them into points. Elizabeth Marrero, who started an 8-0 rush in the opening period with a steal and score, finished it by burying a long two-pointer from the left side that gave Bryan a 14-3 advantage.

Temple's Maya Williams hit a shot from the baseline with 22 second left in the quarter that cut the lead to 14-5. It was Williams' only basket and the last one for the Tem-Cats until the second half.

Temple's defense was good enough to stay in touch despite scoring only nine points in the first half. A pair of 3-pointers by senior guard Jordan Truesdale cut Bryan's lead to 26-15. It got closer when Temple's Loryn Goodwin made a sideline steal and sent a lead pass forward to Alesha Mosley for a layup that left the Lady Vikings with a 28-20 lead.

Bryan inched forward in the third quarter and raced away in the fourth period.

With a district title on the line, so were the Lady Vikings, who sank 17 of 26 free throws.

Bryan pushed forward with its typical daring passing. Gia Ayers passed ahead and through the middle of the Temple defense to hit Amanda Lawson, whose three-point play sparked Bryan's run. Lawson scored a team-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, had two steals and two blocked shots.

Marrero, who scored 12 points, made a shot from the top of the circle and a twisting shot inside. In between, Ayers had a steal and a score, while Micah Marshall hit four free throws and assisted on Carlisha Wyatt's basket. Ayers and Marshall each had four assists. Ayers added 10 points, eight steals and seven rebounds.

Goodwin and Mosley led Temple with eight points each.
