Consol edges Cove, still tied for district lead: KILLEEN -- In the closing seconds Friday, leading by just one point, A&M Consolidated's Justin Campbell drew an offensive foul, which was followed by two free throws by Kevin Jefferson and a 66-63 victory over Copperas Cove.

Even considering Campbell's numbers -- 24 points and 13 rebounds -- taking the charge was probably the play of the game. Jefferson also had a great night, adding 24 points and shooting 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.

The win kept Consol (17-8) atop District 12-5A halfway through league play at 4-1. The Tigers continue district action at Killeen Ellison at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Bryan handles Belton on the road: BELTON -- After a slow start led to a three-point deficit after one quarter, the Bryan boys basketball team torched Belton 84-60 on Friday, scoring 22 or more points in each of the following periods.

Six players scored nine or more points, led by Terrance Tucker's 21 and Dontreal Bazy's 15.

The Vikings (20-5) improved to 4-1 in District 12-5A action and are tied with Consol for the league lead, while Consol holds the tiebreaker. Bryan will play at Harker Heights at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Rudder beats district foe Navasota: Brooke Engel scored two goals Friday, leading the Rudder girls soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Navasota.

Mara Boyd and Jenna Galliher each added a goal for the Lady Rangers (2-0), who visit Taylor on Tuesday.

GYMNASTICS

Consol girls win Kingwood Invitational: HOUSTON -- The A&M Consolidated girls gymnastics team finished first at the Kingwood Invitational on Friday, scoring 104.7 points, followed by Round Rock (103.6) and Alvin (100.65).

Lena Serhan placed 10th on the vault, while Megan Schill finished eighth in the floor exercise.

Debra Roussel finished seventh on uneven bars and fifth on balance beam, Taylor Chenault finished sixth on the vault and fourth on the balance beam, Maggie Drummond finished 10th in the floor exercise and won silver on the balance beam, and Catherine Chenault finished eighth on both the vault and uneven bars.

Placing in three competitions was Alison Garlick, who finished fifth on the uneven bars, fourth in the floor exercise and won gold on the balance beam.

Ben Guzman competed for the boys team, placing 10th on the high bar, ninth in the floor exercise, fourth on the vault, third on the pommel horse and finishing seventh all-around.

Consol's next meet will be Jan. 29 at Round Rock.

Rudder finishes third at Kingwood Invitational: HOUSTON -- Michael Gonzalez finished fifth in the all-around to lead Rudder's gymnastics team to a third-place finish at the Kingwood Invitational.

Rudder finished with 125.2 points, trailing Round Rock by 8.4 and Kingwood by 24.6.

Gonzalez placed seventh on the floor, sixth on the pommel horse, third on the rings, fifth on the vault and second on the parallel bars.

Rudder's Tyler Houdek also placed in the top 10 in numerous events. He was 10th on the floor, eighth on the rings, sixth on the parallel bars and eighth on the high bar for eighth in the all-around.

Kenneth Newbold placed third on the floor and 10th on the pommel horse, and Roberto Ochoa was eighth on the vault.

Rudder's next meet is Jan. 29 at Arlington.
