The Bryan Lady Vikings could be forgiven if they were ready for a woeful basketball season to end. For a quarter, the Temple Tem-Cats made Bryan look as though its season was already over.

Temple shut out Bryan 19-0 in the first eight minutes of play Tuesday at Viking Gym and eased to a 58-11 win in the final game of the regular season.

"I'm pretty disappointed in our energy and effort today," Bryan coach Beth Jesurun said. "I thought we had some kids that played hard, but others went through the motions. It's been a tough year. That's understandable, but not going 100 percent is never acceptable."

Bryan finished the season at 2-27 overall and 0-12 in District 12-5A.

"I always thought it would [turn around]," said Jesurun of the season. "Last Friday, we played a very good game at Belton. You're always hoping as a coach that you're going to turn the corner. We never seemed to turn the corner."

In building the early lead, Temple began sloppily but improved in an important game for the Tem-Cats. The win left them tied with A&M Consolidated for the district's runner-up spot. Temple (27-8, 11-3) won a coin toss for the second seed but chose to take 12-5A's third seed and a bi-district matchup with 11-5A runner-up Mesquite Horn.

It took Temple 51 seconds to take the lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore Jazzmine Ortiz. Bryan had 10 of its 25 turnovers in the first quarter, and Temple quickly displayed its ability to score in transition, though the running led to seven Temple turnovers in the opening period.

As the game progressed, so did the Tem-Cats' passing. By the fourth period, they were handing out assists as if they were candy.

Temple never really had an offensive letdown, scoring the first 21 points of the game. That streak ended when Bryan's Khadijah Brisby found Alondriah Brown running the right baseline for a running shot with 6:58 remaining in the second period.

Trenise Barnes added another for Bryan, set up by Brown's pass to make the score 24-4. But Temple center Tyesha Taylor started a 10-0 run with two put-back shots. Taylor scored a game-high 14 points and blocked four shots, frustrating the Lady Vikings' early attempts to take the ball inside.

But offense was few and far between for Bryan, which hit five of 36 shots from the field.

"That's obviously been a problem all year and we've got to find a way to correct it," Jesurun said. "These are things we work on all of the time. Part of it is confidence and part of it is playing, watching as a student of the game, not just as a spectator. The other part is repetition, repetition, repetition."

After halftime, Temple picked up its scoring streak where it left off, running off the first 13 points of the third period. That gave the Tem-Cats a 23-0 run that was interrupted only by the halftime break.

Barnes rolled across the lane to score and Alysia Hall followed with a Bryan shot that gave the Lady Vikings their only scoring streak of the night. Hall's four points tied Brown for the Bryan lead.
