The South took advantage of North miscues to grab a 7-4 victory in the Texas Collegiate League All-Star Game on Monday night at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark before 1,523 fans.

The South, which featured 10 players from the host Brazos Valley Bombers, had a trio of two-run innings, each fueled by North blunders.

The South scored two in the first inning on a walk. North catcher Beau Maggi didn't run after ball four -- which was a wild pitch -- because he thought it had hit the foot of the Bombers' Trey Porras. That scored Jordan Hammerman from third and a hustling Chad Kruse from second. The Bombers' Hammerman, who singled to center field, was 2 for 2 and was the game's most valuable player, even though he played only two innings. Kruse, who plays for the Victoria Generals, reached on a fielder's choice when North second baseman Ty Marlow of the East Texas Pump Jacks threw the ball into left field trying to retire Hammerman at second.

The South made it 4-1 in the third. Brett Thornell of the Acadiana Cane Cutters struck out with one out in the third, but reached on a wild pitch. He eventually scored on a grounder by Freddy Villalobos of Victoria. John Cannon made it 4-1 when the Bombers' catcher singled to right to score Villalobos.

The South put the game away with a two-run seventh. North relief pitcher Justin Broadnax hit back-to-back batters, and they eventually scored on Herb Romero's two-out single. The Bombers' Romero had replaced Hammerman at the lucky leadoff spot.

The Bombers' other run came in the fourth, and it too had help from the North. Chad Kruse of Victoria singled. He reached second when shortstop Kirby Pellant of East Texas dropped a throw from Morrow who had fielded Thornell's grounder. Kruse eventually scored on Villalobos' sacrifice fly.

The North used three straight hits in the sixth by Hunter Dozier of East Texas, Beau Maggi of East Texas and Tyler Migl of the Coppell Copperheads to make it 5-3.

The North's mistakes were not confined to defense. The South scored in the eighth on a wild pitch, but baserunning cost it a chance for a big inning. Dozier, who was 2 for 4, reached on an error. Maggi flared a ball into short left field that Dozier thought would be caught, so he ran back to first. Left fielder John Longoria couldn't make a diving catch, but the South defense was able to retire Dozier at second.

Even though the host South had the game won, the bottom of the ninth was played so North pitcher Jason Jester of Tyler College, who has signed with Texas A&M, could pitch for the 18 major league scouts in attendance. Jester didn't disappoint, retiring three straight.

Coppell's Nick Smelser won the home-run hitting contest, beating Victoria's Trent Wagner. The North's Smelser beat the South's Wagner in a five-pitch tiebreaker.

The game was delayed an hour because of rain earlier in the day.
