Check A&M Consolidated's current recipe for baseball success and you'll find the main ingredients are pitching, defense and manufactured runs.

The combination blended nicely Monday afternoon as the ninth-ranked Tigers opened the season with a 4-0 victory over Oak Ridge at Tiger Field.

Consol provided a glimpse at what is expected to be a deep, talented pitching staff as six pitchers combined to limit the War Eagles to three hits while striking out 10.

The game was scheduled to be played at Oak Ridge but was moved because of wet field conditions. Consol was the designated visitor, but the Tigers proved it was their house despite changing pitchers more often than usual because they'll start a tournament at Pearland on Thursday.

"We wanted to throw a bunch of guys, and I thought they all went out there and competed well," Consol coach Chase Mann said. "Pretty much all the guys that pitched are going to need to be starters or relievers this weekend. The guys that only threw an inning, we felt like they came out on a good note."

Oak Ridge put together two serious scoring threats and each was defused by base-running blunders. The War Eagles had back-to-back singles with two outs in the first before courtesy runner Riley McKnight wandered far off first base and was picked off by catcher Ben Kennedy. Oak Ridge loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth before Kennedy's snap throw retired R.J. Feltman, a different substitute runner at the same spot in the lineup.

The Tigers scratched out three runs in the fourth inning without putting a ball into play that escaped the infield grass. Consol capitalized on four walks, a hit batter and an infield single off the pitcher's glove.

Consol's best hitting inning was the fourth, when consecutive singles by Riley Ferrell, Kennedy and Colby Turton produced another run. The Tigers finished with five hits, one of them a gift because Oak Ridge's second baseman was late covering first on what should have been a sacrifice bunt.

Mann said new bat restrictions and rainy weather that limited practice and scrimmage time contributed to the lack of hitting.

"Everybody's behind offensively because of the weather," Mann said. "We're going to have to stay focused and take what we can get, especially with these bats."

Junior Adam Wenck followed starter Seth Holbert, and Wenck was the only Consol pitcher to work more than an inning. The Tigers took the lead immediately after Wenck's stint to give him the victory.

The other Consol relievers who contributed to the shutout were Gabe Sager, Logan Howell, Ferrell and Blake Price.
