Jacob Cadle, A&M Consolidated's third pitcher of the seventh inning, got the final two outs, leaving Bryan with bases loaded in a 5-4 victory Friday at Tiger Field.

The Tigers, playing their first home game of the season because of rainouts and site changes, held off the Vikings in the Crosstown Showdown with help from a stellar defensive play by third baseman Colby Turton, who fielded a dribbler just inside the third-base line and threw home for the force out on Bryan's Jacob Sutherland in the seventh. Cadle then coaxed a hard-hit one-hopper that hit his belly before he threw out Colin Fry to end the game.

"Jacob did a great job," Consol coach Chase Mann said. "He had a rough one his last outing, but he came in with a lot of confidence, threw strikes, and that what it takes."

The win gave the Tigers a 2-0 record in District 12-5A play. They are 13-3 overall. Bryan dropped to 1-1 and 10-7-1.

"We had our guys ready to go tonight," Mann said. "I tried to stress the importance of keeping at it at bat and keep playing solid defense because when you play those guys, you can't ever lay down. They're not going to quit. They're going to keep after it, but our guys did a good job of finding a way to win."

Bryan, which had only two base runners over the first four innings, left eight on base in the last three.

Bryan scored three runs on four hits in the fifth. Second baseman Casey Skalaban gave the Vikings their initial hit, a leadoff double to right. Travis Grygar scored Skalaban with a single to right. Matt Byer plated both Fry and Grygar, before Consol starter Riley Ferrell struck out Tommy Galvan, leaving the Vikings with a runner on each bag.

Mann brought in reliever Chase Miller, who fanned Byer on a check swing. Consecutive walks to Sutherland, Galvan and Skalaban brought home a run and chased Miller from the game in favor of Cadle.

"Chase was a little off tonight, but that was his first time in relief," Mann said. "He's been a starter for us in the tournament. You've got to take a little bit different attitude out as a reliever."

Ferrell, a sophomore, appeared poised to sap the game of any tension. The Consol pitcher held a 5-0 lead and had not given up a hit through four innings.

The Crosstown Showdown doesn't work that way.

"You take your hat off to those guys, but I'll take mine, too," Bryan coach David Powers said. "I had no doubt they'd battle back, none at all."

The Vikings' aggressive approach paid off, hitting early in the count and gambling on the base paths while still trailing in the game.

"That's the game of baseball," Mann said. "When you feel like you're in control and you're coasting along, one thing happens here and there and then you've got a dogfight on your hands."

Before Bryan mounted its comeback, the Tigers were nearly flawless in building their 5-0 edge. Ferrell issued just two walks in the first four frames, including a leadoff walk to Grygar. The right-handed pitcher then retired 10 straight batters, striking out three, before Sutherland drew a fourth-inning free pass on a full count.

Ferrell's one-out single started a three-run second inning for Consol. No. 9 hitter Shelby Robinson pulled a two-run single to left that Jeremy Zdunkewicz nearly caught on a dive. When the ball skipped away, Zdunkewicz traced it down in the outfield and threw it back in before falling back to the ground.

Zdunkewicz was injured on the play.

"He didn't even feel it until after he had thrown the ball," Powers said. "After what we've seen, we thought he'd catch it. It was a great effort. There's a big old lump on his thumb. It's kind of gone down, but he's going to have to go see a doctor."

Consol added a third run when shortstop Alec Paradowski worked a walk to load the bases and bring Kevin Bishop to the plate. His walk forced in a run.

Bishop was 2 for 3 and drove in three runs. He doubled to left in the fourth to score Robinson and Michael Todaro, who had walked.
