Coming soon to a ballpark near you: The best baseball prospects the Texas Collegiate League has to offer.

The Brazos Valley Bombers will host the TCL all-star game for the first time in the franchise's five years when the league's top players gather for a showcase at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark on Monday.

There will be a home run derby at 6:15 p.m., with the game matching all-stars from the North versus South set to start at 7:35 p.m. Bombers owner Uri Geva expects a big crowd of more than 1,500, but tickets are available starting at $5 for children, students and seniors, and $7 for adults.

Bombers officials will maintain their fan-friendly game environment with contests and give-aways between innings, but the players will get more of the focus during the all-star game. Geva said 15 or more scouts from Major League Baseball teams will be on hand.

"This is about highlighting our league," said Geva, who also serves as president of the TCL. "You'll see those guys [scouts] with their radar guns and stopwatches, looking for talent. From a baseball perspective, that's what this league is all about, giving these young athletes an opportunity to shine in front of major league scouts with the wood bat in a minor league environment."

The all-star rosters include 22 players on each team, all selected in voting by the league's coaches. The Bombers landed nine players on the South squad, which includes representatives from the Acadiana Cane Cutters and the Victoria Generals. BV coach Brent Alumbaugh will direct the South squad because the Bombers are hosting the game.

Ben Taylor of the league-leading East Texas Pump Jacks will coach the North team, which features 11 of his players. The other players on the North come from the Alexandria Aces and the Coppell Copperheads.

This is the second consecutive year for the North-South format. When the league had two divisions, all-stars represented each division.

Geva said he hopes his fifth-year franchise will break even for the first time this season. Brazos Valley holds league attendance records for a single game (1,865) and season (24,984).

"It's a chance to showcase the Bombers to the other teams," Geva said. "All the executives from the front office of the other teams are going to be there. This is our moment to shine within the league."

The officials from other teams will see a Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark infield in bad condition. Because of steady use and the current drought, the infield regularly produces wild hops that make otherwise routine grounders into adventures. Bombers coaches jokingly call it a home field advantage because their players know the bounces better.

"It's a sore spot for us," Geva said. "There are a lot of improvements that the facility and the field need to have. It might not be in the pristine condition that the Copperheads or the Canecutters have, but a baseball game is also about the atmosphere that you're able to create.

"I asked our catcher where our field ranks between the six fields and he actually said we were fifth. There's room to go. Maybe next year we can move up to fourth."

Bombers scheduled to start are catcher John Cannon, first baseman Trey Porras, third baseman Casey Dykes and outfielder Jordan Hammerman. There are four BV pitchers on the roster, led by closer Garrett Shepperd, who already has matched the TCL record with nine saves.

The North roster includes East Texas pitcher Jason Jester of Tyler Junior College, who has signed with Texas A&M.
