For the second night in a row the Brazos Valley Bombers came up just short of defeating the Coppell Copperheads in the 2011 TCL championship series.

The Copperheads wrapped up their fourth TCL title by defeating the Bombers 3-1 on Tuesday at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark to win the series 2-0.

Coppell jumped to an early lead much like they had in Game 1, though not with the same fervor. This time the Copperheads opened with a pair of runs and led 2-0 through six innings -- they led 9-0 through five innings Monday.

Bombers starting pitcher Michael Hilliard fielded a routine ground ball and sent the throw over first baseman Jacob House's head. The error allowed Coppell to score the first run, and the Copperheads got the second run on a sacrafice fly.

The two teams hunkered down from there, trading zeros on the scoreboard until the seventh. Hilliard finished his outing by allowing two runs on three hits while striking out eight batters over six innings. He got important strikeouts to end the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Brazos Valley's offense finally struck in the seventh inning as the Bombers rallied for the second straight night with two outs. With runners on first and second, right fielder Herb Romero sent a ground ball through the hole between third base and the shortstop. As it rolled to the outfielder, catcher John Cannon rounded third for home but appeared to be an easy out. Instead, he slid safely across home plate as the catcher bobbled the throw. It was all the Bombers could muster as they left the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Copperheads added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Bombers finished the season 31-33 overall and earned their best showing in the playoffs in the league's five-year history. It was the first year the Bombers won more than one playoff game and their first trip to the championship series.
