Here's an example of how Friday's game against the Victoria Generals went for the Brazos Valley Bombers.

Bombers right fielder Joe Craven took ball four and was awarded first base by the home plate umpire, but Craven didn't realize it. He stepped back into the batters' box for two more pitches before striking out to end the game.

It was that kind of night as Brazos Valley was shut out by Victoria 10-0 at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark.

A crowd of 1,191 saw the Texas Collegiate League-leading Victoria Generals (18-9) send nine men to the plate in the top of the first, scoring four runs on five hits off Bombers' starter Travis Smith.

Smith (0-4) recovered, giving up just two runs over the next 5 2/3 innings. The junior from the University of Michigan struck out four and walked three while giving up nine hits.

Victoria starter Tyler King (3-1) pitched into the sixth inning to pick up the victory. King struck out nine of the 22 batters he faced, walked three and gave up two hits. Reliever Chris Pena got his second save by pitching the final four innings, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out three.

It didn't get much better for the Bombers offense. Designated hitter Joaquin Hinojosa went 0 for 2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. Craven also reached base twice, going 2 for 4 with two strikeouts.

The Bombers did threaten in in the bottom of the sixth, however, when Hinojosa was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Texas A&M third baseman Nick Fleece followed with a single, putting a runner in scoring position with no outs and chasing Victoria's King. Pena came in and got a strikeout and a double play to end the inning.

The Bombers (13-11) will host Victoria again at 7 p.m. Saturday.

NOTES -- Reggy the Purple Party Dude made his annual visit to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark, delighting the fans with his antics. In the middle of the second inning, Reggy even had an impromptu dance-off with Victoria's first base coach. ...Victoria third baseman Brian Nephew was ejected in the top of the first inning after bumping into Dykes on a play at the plate. When Chris Whitehead replaced Nephew, it marked the third third baseman Victoria had in the game. Head coach Chris Clemons had originally placed Kenny Jackson in the lineup but had to scratch him due to a wrist injury. ... David Vaught threw out a ceremonial first pitch on Friday. Vaught is a professor of history at Texas A&M, a member of the Society for Baseball Research and has recently published a book about baseball in rural America.
