Garrett Dohnalik hit two-run homer in the third inning to help power Bryan Harvey to an 8-0 victory over Madisonville on Monday in the opening game of the District 33 Major Boys baseball tournament at Harvey Field.
Dohnalik's two-out homer scored Trevor Russ, and Zach Godfrey doubled in the inning. He was thrown out at third to end the frame.
Harvey had hits in every inning and scored in all but the first. T.J Distefano, who was at the plate when Godfrey was tagged out, opened the fourth inning with a solo homer to right.
The start of the game was delayed 23 minutes because of a rain shower that arrived before the scheduled 6 p.m. start. That cooled the temperature considerably, and Harvey's pitchers never let Madisonville's bats get hot.
Harvey used three pitchers on its way to a one-hit shutout. C.J. Sullivan allowed the only Madisonville hit, a one-out single in the first inning by Madisonville's Cole Allen. Sullivan struck out three batters in four innings before giving way to Russ, who pitched 1 2/3 innings. He departed with a 2-2 count on Jake Benett, who grounded out after Sean Arnold took the mound.
Michael Alvarado came as close as any Madisonville player to scoring. After beating out a double play attempt when he moved into second, the ball trickled into the outfield but Alvarado was thrown out at third.
Harvey took a 2-0 lead in the second, with Arnold and Godfrey each drawing walks and scoring ahead of a one-out single by Dylan Godfrey.
Harvey scored three runs in the fourth. After Distefano's home run, Dylan Godfrey was hit by a pitch on a 3-0 count. He scored when catcher Holt Van Etten pulled a singled to right. Arnold brought Van Etten home with a single to left, but Russ was thrown out trying to score thanks to a nice sweep tag by Madisonville catcher Mason Jarrell.
Brent Westbrook scored Harvey's final run in the fifth inning. He beat out an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a groundout and scored on the only error of the game.
Benett took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings. He walked six. Reliever Kyle Poe closed out the game for Madisonville.
Harvey will host Bryan North in the second round of the tournament for 11- and 12-year-old all-stars. The game is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Madisonville will try to work its way through the consolation bracket, playing at 6 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination game.
